All-State girls basketball games to be held Saturday

The 15th annual All-State girls basketball games for Washington 3A, 2A, 1A and B players is Saturday at West Valley High School.

The teams are divided between West and East. The B’s are the first of three games beginning at 1:30, followed by the 1A’s at 3:30 and the 3A/2A teams at 5:30. All-day admission is $5 for adults and $3 for senior citizens and children under 12.

Area East B players are Samantha Charlton of Kettle Falls, Miranda Mielke of Davenport, Kelsey Moos and Chantel Heath of Reardan, Dominique Ali and Lauren Flett of Wellpinit and Ali Winters of St. John-Endicott. The coach is Ed Shields of Reardan.

Area East 1A players are Ashley Knight of Colville, Miranda Frederick of Newport, Lexie Zappone of Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls) and Mackenzie Taylor and Alyssa Maine of Freeman. The coach is Ashlee Nimri of Freeman.

Area East 3A/2A players are Kendra Knutsen and Chelsea Chandler of Shadle Park, Laikyn Brophy and Allie Brown of Cheney and Tessa Heins of Deer Park. The coach is Loren Carlon of West Valley.

Four players from North Idaho will play on the West 1A team. They are Maggie Kirscher of Sandpoint, Taylor Anderson of Moscow, Tisha Phillips of Lewiston and Kara Wenstrom of Timberlake.

Scholastic champs

For a fourth straight year, Mead is the WIAA/Washington Army National Guard Scholastic Cup champion for 2010-11 for 4A.

Almira/Coulee-Hartline is the scholastic champion for 1B.

Mead finished with 1,155 points and ACH had 1,125.

Mt. Spokane names coach

Former Reardan boys basketball coach Dan Smith has been named head coach at Mt. Spokane.

Smith takes over for Greg Hannan, who resigned after two seasons. Smith was the junior varsity girls coach the last two years at Mt. Spokane. He was a varsity assistant for eight years to former Mt. Spokane boys coach Bill Ayers.

Prior to moving to Mt. Spokane, Smith was the head coach at Reardan from 1995-2000. He coached Reardan to second in 1997, the last time the school captured a state trophy.

“I’m excited to get the program built up,” Smith said. “We have some really nice kids to work with. We want to turn the program around.”

Soccer

Taryn Miller, 13, was recently nominated into the U.S. Club Soccer ID2 regional program. Miller was nominated by the U.S. Club Soccer’s ID2 regional scouts and will compete within a regional pool with some of the best players in the region in pursuit of a role within U.S. Club’s ID2 national program later this year.

Miller, who plays for River City G95 Black, is coached by Mark Lindsay. She will be a freshman at Central Valley in the fall.

Softball

The Spokane Dawgs captured the championship in the 16-and-under division at the Garden City Walk Off ASA tournament June 3-5 in Missoula.

The Dawgs compiled a 5-1 record, winning their last five games after a 4-1 loss in the first pool-play game. They went into the single-elimination championship round with the No. 2 seed out of their pool. They defeated the Spokane Stealth 6-3, the Calgary Kaizen 5-2 in the semifinals and the Frenchtown (Mont.) Fury 5-4 in the championship game.

Michelle Strauss led the Dawgs with a .636 batting average during the tourney and leadoff hitter Alyssa Novak batted .562 with three stolen bases. Malia Wash pitched 17 innings with an earned run average of 0.82 and 11 strikeouts.

Renee Stewart is head coach of the Dawgs, comprised of players from Ferris, Shadle Park, Rogers, North Central, Mt. Spokane and Lewiston high schools. Scott Steele is the assistant coach.

Northwest Wildfire of Spokane finished third in the 16-U division. Wildfire-Black of Spokane was second in the 10-U division.

Baseball

Colin Comack went 3 for 4 with two homers and four RBIs as the Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen topped the Spokane Blue Devils 8-4 in the championship game of the inaugural Border Wars American Legion tournament June 5 at McEuen Field in Coeur d’Alene.

CdA went 5-0 in the tourney. • Adam Paulson of Medical Lake struck out 19 batters in a seven-inning win over East Valley last week.
