In brief: Festival will feature local artists July 24

VALLEYFORD – On Sacred Grounds Art and Book Gallery, 12212 E. Palouse Highway, will host the fifth annual “Artists Loose on the Palouse Art Festival” June 29 through July 24.

The event will feature a variety of multimedia exhibits from local artists.

On Sacred Grounds is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sundays.

Parade, ceremony mark Flag Day on Saturday

SPOKANE – In honor of Flag Day, a parade and flag retirement ceremony will be held on Saturday at 10:30 a.m.

The parade will start at the Convention Center along Spokane Falls Boulevard and end at Veterans Park, on the northeast side of the Monroe Street Bridge. Veterans’ organizations, Boy Scouts re-enactor groups, decorated vehicles, walking units and the 560th Air Force Band will participate in the parade. Immediately following the parade, the public is invited to attend a flag retirement ceremony at Veterans Park honoring veterans of World War II from the greater Spokane area.

To retire an unserviceable flag or to make a donation, contact Boy Scouts of America, 411 W. Boy Scout Way; Fairmount Memorial Association, 5200 W. Wellesley Ave., 211 N. Government Way, 508 N. Government Way, and 5909 Cheney-Spokane Road; or any Inland Northwest Bank location.

For a donation of $25 or more to the Boy Scout Flag Fund, Scouts will properly retire the worn flag and replace it with a new one. Flag ashes will be deposited in the American Flag Memorial. Flags will be collected Saturday between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. in Veterans Park. 

Animal shelters focus on cat adoption

SPOKANE COUNTY – June is national adopt-a-shelter-cat month and local animal shelters are asking residents to consider giving homeless cats and kittens much-needed homes.

SCRAPS, 2521 N. Flora Road in Spokane Valley, the Spokane Humane Society, 6607 N. Havana St., and SpokAnimal, 710 N. Napa St., have low-cost spay/neuter programs and adoption specials during the month of June.

Arts Walk will highlight music, culture

SPOKANE – The International District Arts Walk will debut Friday and will be held the third Friday of each month. Members of the community can celebrate art, diversity and culture in the Spokane International District, on East Sprague Avenue between Helena and Crestline streets, from 5 to 9 p.m.

The family-friendly event will include art, literature, live music, dance demonstrations and children’s activities. Artists and musicians include Dan Harris, Jessica Raugust, Jessica LaPrade, Wonder Wonder, Bill Tierny and Friends, Tamerra Thompson, Priscilla Barnett, Denae, Clara Woods, Bruce Hormann and the Balloon Guy.
