In brief: Mariners draft choices lead Virginia to win

College Baseball: John Hicks’ RBI single in the seventh inning broke a scoreless tie and Virginia went on to defeat California 4-1 at the College World Series on Sunday in Omaha, Neb.

Virginia ace Danny Hultzen and Tyler Wilson were within an out of combining for the first CWS shutout in five years before Chad Bunting hit a run-scoring single over shortstop with two outs in the ninth inning.

Hicks and Hultzen were both selected by the Mariners in the MLB draft.

Hicks’ one-out base hit into center ended the longest scoreless CWS game in 24 years, and Steve Proscia followed with a sacrifice fly.

The No. 1 seed Cavaliers (55-10) move to a Bracket 2 winners’ game on Tuesday night. They’ll play South Carolina.

Cal (37-22) meets Texas A&MTuesday.

Hultzen allowed three hits over 6 1/3 innings. He walked three and struck out six. Wilson (9-0) got the win and Branden Kline recorded the last out for his 18th save.

Logan Scott (1-2) took the loss in relief of Erik Johnson, who struggled for a third straight start.

• South Carolina wins with walk-off single: Scott Wingo drilled a bases-loaded single off the right-field wall in the bottom of the ninth inning to give defending national champion South Carolina a 5-4 victory over Texas A&M at the College World Series in Omaha, Neb.

Wingo’s winning hit against Nick Fleece capped his career-best four-hit night, and he reached base five times.

Robert Beary doubled off the right-field fence to start the inning against Kyle Martin (2-3). Beary went to third when 2010 CWS Most Outstanding Player Jackie Bradley Jr., playing in his first game in two months, sliced a liner into left off Fleece. Evan Marzilli walked to load the bases.

Nevada’s Ault wins contract extension

College Football: Nevada football coach Chris Ault has won a two-year contract extension after guiding the Wolf Pack to a 13-1 record and the No. 11 ranking last season.

The Nevada Board of Regents on Friday approved adding two years to Ault’s current contract, which has another year left. The contract now runs through the 2013 season.

Ault had earned a base annual salary of $443,092, plus performance bonuses.

Jones, Dempsey lead U.S. past Jamaica

Miscellany: In, Washington, Jermaine Jones scored in the 49th minute and Clint Dempsey added a goal in the 80th in the United States’ 2-0 victory over Jamaica in the CONCACAF Gold Cup quarterfinals.

On Wednesday in Houston, the United States will face the Panama-El Salvador winner.

Jones fired a shot from outside the penalty area and Jamaica defender Jermaine Taylor stuck out his foot, deflecting the ball past goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts. It was Jones’ first goal of the tournament.

Taylor came out on the losing end of another exchange between the two nearly 20 minutes later. Jones beat the defense in the middle of Jamaica’s half and was about to break free for a 1-on-1 chance when Taylor tackled him from behind, earning a red card in the 67th minute.

• Leipheimer wins Tour of Switzerland: In Schaffhausen, Switzerland, Levi Leipheimer of the United States won the Tour of Switzerland, overtaking Damiano Cunego of Italy in the final time trial.

Leipheimer, a 37-year-old RadioShack rider, finished in 31 hours, 45 minutes, 2 seconds. Cunego had worn the yellow jersey since Monday and finished 4 seconds behind.

Steven Kruijswijk of the Netherlands was third, 62 seconds behind the leader. U.S. rider Tejay Van Garderen was 10th overall despite equipment problems during the last stage.

• Brazilian duo wins beach volleyball world title: In Rome, Brazilians Larissa Franca and Juliana Felisberta Da Silva have won their first beach volleyball world title, beating two-time Olympic champions Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh of the U.S.

In the men’s final, Alison Cerutti and Emanuel Rego beat fellow Brazilians Marcio Araujo and Ricardo Santos 21-16, 21-15. Rego also won in 1999 and 2003.

The top-seeded Franca and Felisberta Da Silva won 21-17, 13-21, 16-14 at the Foro Italico tennis stadium. They won the silver medal in 2005 and 2009 and bronze in 2007.

• Walker wins Bassmaster’s Dixie Duel: In Decatur, Ala., David Walker won the Bassmaster Elite Series’ Dixie Duel at Wheeler Lake, with a catch of 63 pounds, 10 ounces.

Walker, from Sevierville, Tenn., earned $100,000 and a 2012 Bassmaster Classic berth for his first Elite Series victory. Kevin VanDam, from Kalamazoo, Mich., was second – 1 pound, 13 ounces back.
