G-Prep boys lacrosse team has banner year
The Gonzaga Prep boys lacrosse team recently captured a league title and finished as state runner-up, and it did so in another state.
Gonzaga Prep is part of the North Idaho Lacrosse League. The Bullpups earned the league title last month when they defeated Coeur d’Alene 11-10, with the winning score coming in the final minutes.
It’s the second time in league history that Gonzaga Prep has captured the league championship.
A week later, G-Prep fell to Treasure Valley League champion Bishop Kelly of Boise 8-6 in the state title match at Eagle, Idaho. The Bullpups trailed 5-0 at the end of the first quarter but cut the margin to 5-2 by halftime. They scored four more goals in the second half but Bishop Kelly prevailed.
G-Prep’s roster consisted of 11 seniors, four juniors, seven sophomores and four freshmen. The seniors are Geoff Barnes, Micha Duncan, Jordan Fitzgerald, Tommy Gill, Alex Miewald, Brian Moloney, Lee Palmer, Skylar Penberthy, Logan Rogers, Keenan Sullivan and Dylan Weller. The state final was played on May 28 meaning the seniors missed their Baccalaureate Mass but returned to Spokane in time to receive their diplomas during the graduation ceremony.
Others on the team were juniors Thomas Greany, Jim Grover, Taylor O’Keeffe and William Slater, sophomores Luke Bean, Luke Johnson, Jack Kimbro, James Pelkie, Jack Skeirka, Rob Smooth and Hayden Thomas and freshmen JJ Barnett, Austin Mehaffrey, Evan Ogden and John Stone.
Golf
Spokane golfers stole the show at the USGA boys and girls 17-and-under junior qualifying tournament at Manito Golf and Country Club on Monday.
John-Michael Larson of Lewis and Clark High School won the boys event with a two-round total of 144 and advanced to the national tournament at Gold Mountain Golf Course in Bremerton, Wash.
Joining Larson was Aaron Crawford of Calgary, Alberta. Crawford, Tanner Comes and Tye Morrison finished in a three-way tie for second at 149. Larson advanced by winning a tiebreaker. Comes, who will be a freshman at Ferris in September, is first alternate. Morrison, who attends Mt. Spokane, is second alternate.
Lewis and Clark seniors Megan Haase and Sydney Kersten were among five girls who qualified for the national tournament in Chicago.
Haase was runner-up with a 72, while Kersten was third with a 74. Canadian Anica Yoo won the event with a 69.
Fund drive started
Coeur d’Alene High School has kicked off a fund-raising effort to build a fieldhouse that could be used by baseball, softball, golf, volleyball, soccer and track teams. The building could also be used to host other activities including banquets.
The multisport building will be built in memory of Coeur d’Alene graduates and athletes Devon Austin and Ryan Reinhardt. Both died in a tragic car accident last fall near Twin Falls, Idaho.
The estimated cost for the building is $130,000. The building will be 100 feet by 75 feet with a 16-foot ceiling.

New coach, A.D.
Justin Blayne has been named athletic director and boys basketball coach at Rosalia.
He replaces Rob Hudkins, who stepped down from both positions. He was head coach for nine years and A.D. for one.
“I’m kind of burned out and ready to spend time with my family,” Hudkins said. “I have a 19-month-old (child) and decided it was a good time to take a break.”
Blayne, 27, is a 2002 Medical Lake graduate. He was an assistant boys coach at his alma mater (2005-08) and head girls coach for two years (2008-10). He also was the head tennis coach (2007-10).
“First of all I’m tremendously excited to be (at Rosalia),” Blayne said. “They have a rich history and tradition in basketball. They certainly know how to win down there. I’m excited to pick up where they left off and hope to propel that even further if possible.”
