Two Spokane Indians combine on shutout

YAKIMA – Santo Perez was marvelous on the mound and Spokane supported him with an 11-hit attack that included three triples and a homer as the Indians blanked the Yakima Bears 5-0 in a Northwest League baseball game on Friday night at Yakima County Stadium. Perez (1-0) picked up the win in his second start, giving up just three hits and no walks over seven innings while striking out five Bears. Another pitcher from the Dominican Republic, Jose Monegro, got the save with two innings of relief, striking out four, including three in the ninth. He gave up one hit. The Indians jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Brett Nicholas hit a home run, his second of the season, over the right-field fence with one out. With two outs, Guillermo Pimentel singled to center and scored when Jorge Alfaro followed with a triple, also to center. Alfaro was stranded when Braxton Lane struck out. Spokane added a run in the sixth when Nicholas scored from first base on Trever Adams’ third double of the season. Pimentel hit a single to right that sent Adams to third, but Alfaro grounded into a double play. The Indians capped their scoring with two runs in the ninth. Pimentel, who went 3 for 3, greeted Yakima’s third pitcher, Justin Albert, with a triple to right field. After a ground out, Braxton Lane tripled to center for an RBI and then scored on Rougned Odor’s single to right. The Indians, 6-2 after taking two of three games at Yakima, head to Boise (4-4) for a three-game series that begins Saturday night. The team returns home for a three-game set against Yakima (2-6) on Tuesday.
