Your week

YOUR HOME

So now that the sun is making more frequent appearances, you might be noticing just how dirty your windows are.

Even freshly scrubbed windows can look streaky if your cleaner contains wax, or if it’s too hot out and the cleaner dries too quickly.

Many pros recommend washing windows with plain soap and water and a squeegee. A small squirt of liquid dish detergent in a bucket half-filled with cool water should suffice.

Apply the cleaning solution with a sponge or window scrubber. Using a clean cloth, dry a small strip down one edge of the window to create a dry place for the squeegee to start, then pull it straight across the window, drying the blade between strokes.

Window maker Jeld-Wen recommends cleaning with a solution of either 1 teaspoon baby shampoo or 1 1/2 cups vinegar in a gallon of water. Apply with a clean, soft cloth or sponge, rinse with clean water and then promptly and thoroughly dry the glass.

YOUR HEALTH

If you want to avoid those brownish “age spots” as you get older, start slathering on the sunscreen now. Some advice from the experts:

• Start early. Age spots are the result of a lifetime of exposure to the sun or tanning beds, but damage can start appearing in your 20s.

• Choose sunscreen with a protection factor of at least 15 (even better, 50) that protects against both UVA and UVB rays. Put it on about 20 minutes before heading outside and reapply every two hours.

• Pay attention to trouble areas. The back of your hands and your face and chest are most likely to develop age spots.

• Remember that the sun’s rays are most intense between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Wear a wide-brimmed hat, sit under an umbrella and cover your arms and legs with lightweight fabrics.
