Pac-10 salutes WSU’s Anderson

Track and field: Washington State’s Jeshua Anderson, four-time Pacific-10 Conference intermediate hurdles champion, three-time NCAA champion and newly crowned USA champion, is the Pac-10 Male Track Athlete of the Year, CEO Larry Scott announced Monday.

On Sunday, Anderson won the USA Track & Field Championships in a school-record and U.S.-leading time of 47.93 seconds. He will represent the United States at both the World University Games Aug. 12-23, in Shenzhen, China, and at the IAAF World Championships in Athletics, Aug. 27-Sept. 4, at Daegu, South Korea.

Anderson was selected the 2006 Pac-10 Track & Field Male Newcomer of the Year and is only the third man to go on to the Athlete of the Year award since the newcomer award began in 2000. Anderson, who plans to continue training in Pullman with his college coach Mark Macdonald, will make his professional debut July 22, at the Herculis Meet in Monaco, part of the Diamond League series.

Kentucky adds to Calipari fund

Basketball: The University of Kentucky has given men’s basketball coach John Calipari an extension that makes his contract worth $36.5 million and will keep him coaching the Wildcats through 2019.

In his first two seasons at Kentucky, the Wildcats have gone 64-12 and last season earned their first trip to the NCAA Final Four in 13 years. They are 33-0 at home in Rupp Arena under Calipari.

UK added two years to Calipari’s current contract and reworked the compensation so that he is guaranteed $3.8 million for the next eight seasons and retention bonuses of $1 million in five of the next eight years and $1.1 million in the final year. He is also eligible for up to $850,000 in annual incentives.

“What John Calipari has done on and off the court in the past two years to reunite and rejuvenate this fan base has been magical,” Kentucky athletics director Mitch Barnhart said in the statement.

The new contract includes a base salary of $400,000 and $3.4 million in media and endorsement money.

British golfers top rankings

British golfers hold the top three spots in the world rankings, the first time that’s happened in the 25-year history of the rankings.

Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland rose to third Monday following his triumph at the U.S. Open. Englishmen Luke Donald and Lee Westwood are No. 1 and No. 2.

McIlroy overtook PGA Champion Martin Kaymer without playing last weekend because of the German’s poor showing at the BMW International Open.

McIlroy won the U.S. Open by a record score on June 19.
