In brief: Newman Lake fire, SCOPE plan event

NEWMAN LAKE – On Saturday and Sunday, the Newman Lake Fire Auxiliary and the members of SCOPE will hold an annual hot-dog and T-shirt sale at the Moab Junction Exxon Station at the corner of Starr Road and Trent Avenue.

From 10 a.m. until the hot dogs and T-shirts run out each day, the community is invited to visit with Newman Lake volunteers and firefighters.

Proceeds from the sales will support the Newman Lake Fire Department.

Tandem rally this weekend

WEST HILLS – The 26th annual Northwest Tandem Rally, sponsored by the Spokane Regional Sports Commission, will be Friday through Monday and will include more than 600 tandem cycling enthusiasts.

“Pedalin’ the Palouse” is expected to include more than 300 bikes, with two, and sometimes more riders each. Headquarters for the rally will be at Mukogawa Fort Wright Institute, 4000 W. Randolph Road.

Good Sam hosts hot rod car show

GREENACRES – The Good Samaritan Society, 17121 E. Eighth Ave., will have a hot rod car show on July 10 from 1 to 4 p.m.

Admission to the family event is free, and hot dogs, cotton candy and refreshments will be available to purchase.

All proceeds from the show will benefit leisure care activities for the residents of Good Sam.

Paramedic named instructor of year

SPOKANE COUNTY – Spokane County Fire District 8 paramedic Tom Chavez was recently awarded the 2010 EMS Instructor of the Year award by the Spokane County EMS Council. Chavez was given the award in recognition for his innovations and use of technology in giving training to his fellow paramedics.

In a press release District 8 Fire Department Chief Bill Walkup called Chavez a “fine example of the great members we have working in this agency.” The district serves 110 square miles south of Spokane and Spokane Valley.

Better than Yesterday wins BOBfest 2011

RIVERSIDE – Twelve local bands recently competed in BOBfest 2011, Battle of the Bands, at the Clocktower Meadow in Riverfront Park.

BOBfest winners include Better Than Yesterday, Ferris High School and Odyssey Middle School, first place; Battlesound, Lewis and Clark, second place; Canary in the Coalmine, Jenkins High School in Chewelah, third place; and Beyond Moral, Valley Christian, People’s Choice award.

Better than Yesterday’s first place prize includes recording time at Bear Pit Studio and paid performances at Riverfront Park’s Fourth of July Celebration and Pig Out in the Park.

Junior soccer signup under way

SPOKANE – Registration is now open for the Spokane Junior Soccer’s fall/spring 2011-’12 season.

The league is for youths ages 4 to 14.
