Tagged The Seattle Seahawks placed an original round tender on restricted free agent Brandon Mebane, according to his agent. Mebane has been a starter with the Seahawks almost from the time he was drafted in the third round out of California in 2006. As a restricted free agent, Seattle would receive a third-round pick if Mebane signed elsewhere.

Charged A co-defendant in Michael Vick’s dogfighting conspiracy case who was shot in the leg after a birthday party for the Eagles’ quarterback is charged with violating his probation. A federal probation officer says in a petition filed last week that Quanis Phillips lied to him about having contact with Vick at the June party at a nightclub.

Signed The Seattle Storm re-signed All-Star forward Swin Cash to a multiyear contract, keeping an important part of the 2010 league champions intact. Cash has played three seasons with the Storm. Last season she averaged 13.8 points and six rebounds.

• The San Jose Sharks rewarded goaltender Antti Niemi for helping lead the team’s recent rise in the standings by giving him a $15.2 million, four-year contract extension.

• The New Orleans Saints signed free-agent defensive tackle Shaun Rogers to a one-year contract. Rogers is a former three-time Pro Bowl player recently released by Cleveland.

Arrested Cleveland Indians outfielder Austin Kearns was arrested in Kentucky last month on suspicion of drunk driving just days before he reported to training camp.

Died Former San Francisco 49ers running back Wally Kaname Yonamine, who was also the first American to play professional baseball in Japan after World War II, has died. He was 85. Yonamine died Monday night at a Honolulu retirement home after a bout with prostate cancer.

Greg Goossen, a former Los Angeles Dodgers catcher who played six seasons in the major leagues, then dabbled as a boxing trainer and was a stand-in for actor Gene Hackman in more than a dozen films, was found dead Saturday at his home in the San Fernando Valley. He was 65.
