Defending 3A State champion Priest River boys lose opener

Travis Holt and James Livingston combined for 35 points Thursday and Fruitland (17-6) used a 56-33 rebounding edge to defeat defending champion Priest River 72-61 to open the 3A State tournament at Meridian High School.

Max Salesky scored 22 points and Jaden Barrett hit five 3-pointers for the Spartans (17-6), who play Kimberly (17-6) at 12:15 p.m. today in a loser-out game.

St. Maries 50, Sugar-Salem 44: Ian Heath had game highs of 15 points and 15 rebounds as the Lumberjacks (19-5) topped the Diggers (16-8). Zach Lehman shot 7 of 8 from the line to lead St. Maries’ 16-for-21 night. St. Maries plays Weiser at 7 tonight in the semifinals.

Skyview 56, Moscow 42: Kyle Dranginis had game highs of 20 points, six assists and three steals as the Hawks (20-4) beat the Bears (8-14) at Borah High in Boise. Josh Helbling had nine points and six rebounds for the Bears, who play a loser-out game with Rigby (16-11) at 12:15 p.m. today.

1A Division II

Murtaugh 50, Kootenai 48: Humberto Pacheco led four players in double figures with 13 points as the Red Devils (14-9) beat the Warriors (6-12) at Caldwell High. Jacob Zarpentine scored 17 for Kootenai.
