Hecla in Wonderland

In his Feb. 26 letter to the editor, Don Hood states that “… we all share a responsibility to protect and prolong the health of our environment, but we don’t need our government to legislate that responsibility.”

On Page A5 of that same issue is an article reminding us that it has taken 20 years of government litigation to force Hecla Mining Co. to take even minimal responsibility for the 80 years worth of toxic waste that they discharged into the Coeur d’Alene Basin. It is clear that Mr. Hood dwells on the other side of the looking glass, where believing “three impossible things before breakfast” is not only possible, but required.
