New South Hill center offers child care by the hour

Recess isn’t just for school-age children.

In fact, a new hourly drop-in child care center in Spokane Valley called Recess Time is for children ages 12 months to 12 years. While state licensed as a typical child day care facility, owners say their business is unlike most and they want their facility to fill a different kind of need.

“It’s really for the parent who needs an hour or two for an appointment or to go to the store … or even to clean their house without the kids at home,” said Meghan Suda, who opened Recess Time on Feb. 1 with her husband Matt.

“We want parents to know there’s a place available where your kids are welcome any time,” she said.

Recess Time requires some paperwork, including child immunization records, but owners don’t require long-term contracts. Suda noted they are able to take children on a routine basis for those who might have college classes or a four-hour work shift twice a week, for example.

Her center is open evenings and later on Saturdays, and Suda encourages parents’ nights out.

She also notes how quality time with the kids is much more apparent for parents when the stress of finding quick child care or taking them along for some errands is omitted. Oftentimes there’s a friend or grandparent to help out in such situations. And Suda says there’s now Recess Time as well.

Cost through April 30 is $5 per hour per child. Regular hourly prices after that are $7.50 per child; $13 for two children; $16.50 for three and $5 per child for four or more.

“This is really what I needed,” said Suda, a mother of two youngsters and owner of Studio 525 hair salon, which is next door to the 1,200-square-foot Recess Time on South Pines Road. She and her husband would juggle their work schedules so one parent could be home with the kids. Now she divides her work time between the two businesses. She also has one employee.

The day care facility is a spacious room revamped for play time with various age-appropriate sections – reading corner, dress-up area, and a sectioned area for gaming. A daily craft also is scheduled. Recess Time can accommodate up to 12 children.

An open house is planned Thursday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. when parents can visit the facility with their children. There will be drawings for free hours of service.
