Signed The Green Bay Packers signed coach Mike McCarthy to a new multiyear contract less than a month after winning the Super Bowl. Vice president and general manager Ted Thompson announced the move Friday. Terms were not disclosed. The 47-year-old McCarthy is headed into his sixth year as head coach and has made the playoffs the past four seasons. Including the playoffs, McCarthy is 53-34 with Green Bay.

Charged Authorities say former Oakland Raiders defensive end Anthony Wayne Smith and two others have been charged with murder in the 2008 beating and shooting death of a 31-year-old man in northern Los Angeles County. District attorney officials said in a statement that the 43-year-old Smith was scheduled to appear in court Friday.

Sidelined Oklahoma City Thunder guard Nate Robinson will miss four to six weeks after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his right knee. Thunder general manager Sam Presti said that Robinson first experienced discomfort in the knee after practice on Monday.

• Houston Astros catcher Jason Castro will be sidelined for most or all of the season following surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. Castro, who earned the Astros’ regular catching job as a 22-year-old rookie last season, was injured Wednesday while trying to avoid a tag by Detroit Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera.

Extended Texas Rangers general manager Jon Daniels received a four-year contract extension through the 2015 season.

Suspended New York Islanders forward Trevor Gillies has been hit hard by the National Hockey League again, getting a 10-game ban for a dangerous shot from behind in his first game back from a nine-game suspension. Gillies was ejected Wednesday night for hitting Minnesota Wild forward Cal Clutterbuck.

Died Longtime CBS golf producer Frank Chirkinian, who helped turn the Masters into one of the most watched events in sports television, died Friday at the age of 84 in North Palm Beach, Fla.

Divorced Court records in Los Angeles show Pete Rose filed for divorce from his wife of nearly 27 years. Rose cited irreconcilable differences for the split.
