Your week

YOUR HEALTH

Want to get your teen kids moving more? Get them a dog.

Researchers at the University of Virginia studied 618 pairs of adolescents and their parents in the Minneapolis area and found that teens in dog-owning families logged about 15 additional minutes of moderate-to-vigorous activity per week.

That doesn’t necessarily mean the teens are walking the dogs – a duty that still often falls to parents – but at least they’re playing with the pooches.

YOUR HOME

Give your container gardens year-round appeal with the ideas in “Continuous Container Gardens” (Storey Publishing, $19.95).

Authors Sara Begg Townsend and Roanne Robbins provide plans that let you swap out plants each season, giving you four seasons of beauty from a single container. Twelve plans are offered in all, for 48 different looks.

Townsend and Robbins also offer guidance on choosing plants and pots, planting the containers and caring for the arrangements.
