Gun permit bill advances to full Idaho House
BOISE – A bill to permit guns on Idaho’s college campuses was approved by a legislative committee Thursday and now moves to the full Idaho House, over the objections of law enforcement, the colleges and the state Board of Education.
The bill would permit anyone to openly carry a gun on any Idaho campus, except in undergraduate residence halls.
“It’s a basic human right to be able to protect yourself from those who intend to do you harm,” said Rep. Erik Simpson, R-Idaho Falls, the bill’s sponsor. “Those rights are being overturned by Idaho colleges and universities who are creating a false sense of security for students, faculty and staff and the public by creating gun-free zones.”
Matthew Dogali of the National Rifle Association told the House State Affairs Committee, “You can carry (guns) in any sporting event that is not on a college campus right now. So it doesn’t make any sense why Bronco Stadium is different than a hockey stadium.”
Among those testifying against it were representatives of the Boise Police Department, the state Board of Education, the University of Idaho, Boise State University, Idaho State University and the College of Southern Idaho.
Emily Walton, a BSU student, told the committee, “Students are not asking for this to happen. … Honestly, we think it’s crazy.”
Representatives of both the UI and BSU said the restriction in undergrad dorms is problematic, because in many cases undergraduates and graduate students are housed together in the same units.
Rep. Eric Anderson, R-Priest Lake, said he never knew about the campus gun ban before the bill came up. “We probably run a bigger risk here (in the state Capitol), with some of the angst of the citizenry, and in this institution we have a right to carry,” he said.

Yepper GOPers of Idaho, you are nothing more than a bunch of idiots and the world is now seeing it too. Guns in schools, what a grand idea that is. When it happens, and it will unfortunately cause in Idaho they don’t want any government in their lives, someone will flip out and just start shooting innocent students and staff. Wonder what all you idiot GOPers will say when that happens. Oh, I know, it wasn’t the gun it was the person holding the gun, that is always you lame flipping excuse. This state has really gone to h3ll.
The giant in us democrats has been awoken by you idiot GOPers due to all your lies and being in bed with corporations… Take from the middle class not your rich boys and girls, what a great bunch of people you are. But, the truth is now out and even those that voted your stupid buttttsss in are made as h3ll!!!!

If this is about rights, shouldn’t the drinking age be lowered in ID as well and alcohol readily available on campus?
If you can carry a gun, you should be able to carry a beer.
Best of all, you would be able to carry BOTH all over campus.
What a great day for freedom that would be.

So what is more likely, an act of rage or an act of stupidity? I hear of more acts of stupidity then of rage. My question is how many ACTS OF STUPIDITY needs to happen before you see that this is wrong.
Orphan on March 11 at 8:26 a.m.
otimus The sky is not falling, honest. Why do you think if firearms are allowed on campus all of a sudden people will do stupid things. Your logic is flawed people dont suddenly get stupid when they walk on to a college campus. Concealed permit holders get arrested at a much lowwer ratye than Cops do.
Scoutster owning a firearm is a right see the 2nd Amendment. Beer is not a right it is a privilage big difference.
A lawsuit is comming the day someone that is armed most of the time gets hurt because they had to leave their firearm behind. If anyone disarms someone they are then responsable for that unarmed persons safety until they can re-arm.

This topic was debated “ad nauseum” yesterday on this blog.
The only thing that will satisfy the uber-left, anti-gun paranoids will be a total repeal of the Second Amendment.
The U.S. Supreme Court just recently upheld the broad rights the Second Amendment gives to American citizens to bear arms.

I’ll say once again, I have no problem if you choose to own a gun. Being permitted to carry guns on a college campus is idiotic and dangerous. Period.

I observed an Idiot in the local Wal Mart in Hayden, carrying a gun, strutin’ around., pattin’ his gun, lookin’ to see if anybody was payin’ attention to him, smilin, one little ole lady looked at him and I could see the fear in her face. This guy was a typical Ideeehooo real man, just lookie here at this gun I’m carryin, I’m really a tough dude, (NOT) What you really are is an uneducated idiot, that has such low self esteem, that you make a fool of your self just to get attention. Dude, that ain’t macho, that’s pathetic. Idaho , Geez these morons think like that moron from Iran.

I am all in favor of this bill passing. Just think how 30+ people could have been saved at Virginia Tech, had a student or instructor had a gun. The Long Island train shooting where Ferguson had free access to shoot innocent people. Look at Lubby’s in Texas. McDonald’s in San Ysidro a classic place to prove Californias anti-gun laws. People should be allowed to carry guns for defense. The only time these mass shootings take place is in gun free zones. There the killer knows no one can shoot back. An armed society is a polite society. Government should not require a license from someone practicing a God-given right.
Kivaari on March 11 at 12:41 p.m.
People carry concealed guns all the time. You don’t know who is packing. The more the thugs fear the unknown the better. Just think of all the school shootings that would have been nipped in the bud, had a teacher been armed. On a college campus, how about the former vets with some common sense packing heat? Just because the average democrat is afraid of what they would do with a gun, should not stop responsible people from packing. I don’t trust democrats with guns or law making, they don’t have brains worthy of handling either.

Scoutster, The “gun age” is 21, just like the drinking age. A person needs to be 21 in order to buy a handgun or booze.
Patanjali on March 11 at 2:51 p.m.
This is about as stupid as it gets. It is time we repealed the second amendment. It is no longer needed to ensure that the individual states can maintain their militias, which was the original purpose of the amendment, nor is it needed for any other purpose. Is Canada less free than the U. S? Canada had 106 murders by handguns in 1996 while the U. S. had 9,390, New Zealand had 2, Australia had 13, Great Britain had 30, Japan had 15 and Germany had 213. Each year since 1996 was about the same. If we are too blinded by gunpowder to appeal the entire amendment perhaps we could just ban clips that allows a person to shoot 36 bullets in 19 seconds. What havoc could be generated at a football game with a madman shooting into the crowd.
Kivaari on March 11 at 3:47 p.m.
Patanjali, Yes Canada is less free then the US. Speech is limited in Canada. The right to carry a gun for self defense is restricted. The only reason there are fewer gun crimes in Canada is the culture, not the guns. When I man went on a shooting spree at a Canadian school, no one could stop him either. Just sit back and let the killers kill I guess is the Canadian way. Or for that matter the way the anti-gun crowd wants in this country. Why should people loose a right to self defense? In England if you defend your home, you go to jail.
Would you rather have a gunman come into a classroom with an illegal gun and start killing people, or would you rather have him stopped by an armed teacher? Over 30 kids were killed at Virginia Tech, a gun free zone. What do you do when a man goes on a knife attack like last month in NYC. Didn’t he kill 6 people over a twenty three hour period? Personally I disrespect those that would deny others the right to self defense. It seems that those that would deny a God-given right to others are afraid of themselves and what they would do with a gun. Their personal failings are projected onto others. I personally stopped a knife attack, kidnapping and carjacking because of a personal gun. I guess I could have let the guy complete his act of violence. After all, I didn’t know the victims. If you don’t trust yourself with a gun, why deny the right to others?
Kivaari on March 11 at 3:57 p.m.
Pantajali, RE: Militia. Each state still has a militia. The National Guard IS NOT THE MILITIA. The guard is a reserve component of the US Army and is subject to federalization (under the Dick Act of 1903). State militias are under the control of the governors and cannot be federalized. Don’t feel bad. almost no one in this country understands the militia system. SCOTUS has ruled twice in the last 3 years, that the 2ND ammendment has nothing to do with militias. It exists for the right of individuals. and that is what the framers wanted. Unfortunately our society is full of puzzy-types that wouldn’t go to the aid of others. What would you do if you saw a person being attacked with a knife or baseball bat? What if you are 80 years old and feeble? What if the victim was your spouse or grand child? Scream? Call the police that are 45 minutes away? Run and hide? What if you were at McDonald’s in San Ysidro when a Hubberty walks in and starts killing kids? Fight back, or join the dead? You don’t want the ability to save lives? Some of us refuse to be victims. Some of us would come to your aid, even if you hate us and guns.

detroitdude Please tell us why carrying a firearm on a college campus is any different than carrying a firearm in Wall Mart or anyother public place?
Kivarri Great posts, I 100% agree with you, just one note person needs to be 21 to purchase a handgun from a FFL dealer, but only 18 to purchase from a private party in Washington State.
Patanjali The highest court ruled that the 2nd Amendment is an individual right not a state right so your argument is whats stupid at this point.
Julia I openly carry my firearm all the time and trust me it has nothing to do with being macho, uneducated etc. These things you mention are projections of your personality because that is how you would have to feel to openly carry a weapon. Please stop trying to make myself and others fit your mental mold of what you think is correct. I carry for self protection only. Yes I have used my firearm 3 times over the years to protect myself and loved ones. NO I have not shot anyone and hope I dont ever have to.
Patanjali on March 11 at 11:45 p.m.
Kivaari: Read “Gun Control and The Constitution, Sources and Explorations on the Second Amendment” or another quality book on the original meaning of the 2nd amendment. The current Supreme Court ruled that the 2nd Amendment gave individuals the rights to bear arms but if you read any documents from the original debate you will understand that this amendment was put into the constitution as a states’ rights guarantee so that they could maintain their own armies.
Irregardless, you miss the point, murder by handgun is so much less in other civilized countries because there are so few guns. It has nothing to do with the “culture” which is basically the same in Canada as in the U.S. What I would do if confronted by someone trying to kill another person is also irrelevant to the discussion. As a practical matter I know that the 2nd amendment will never be repealed….although I am hopeful that a more enlightened Supreme Court will limit ownership to non automatic or semi automatic weapons that require a bolt action or lever action before a second bullet can be fired. We restrict gun ownership by criminal record, age, mental stability, and other factors…so why not limit the type of weapons people can own?

Next they will be passing laws to carry an AK-47 to school. Let’s let Idaho secede from the USA, cut every drop of Federal Funding, everybody for himself, dog-eat-dog society, sound familiar, sort of like something from a Stephen King Novel, everybody is carrying, only the most violent will survive, is this what they want, probably, then let them have it, only one rule applies, they gotta all stay in Ideeho no crossing the state line back to the civilized world. Oh yeah, Stephen, the title of your next horror story could be “Re-entering the Twilight Zone, Visit Idaho.” Sounds, good, I think I’ll send this suggestion to the fascist down at the Chamber of (Let’s keep the rich rich and the poor poor,) Commerce. Or maybe they would prefer another title, such as “The Road to Hell is Paved with Republicans.”
idahois2gr82beblue on March 12 at 7:41 p.m.
If you don’t like Idaho, then move. We are proud of how we operate – there are plenty of other states who feel the way that you democrats do. This is one of the last sane places in our country and we would like it to stay that way.
Julia70: “The Road to Hell is Paved with Republicans.”? That’s a funny comment, because I’m pretty sure the baby-killers are going to be lining the streets of hell before people who vote to have the right to carry a gun for self defense. Enough said.
Julia70 on March 12 at 8:23 p.m.
Okay, speaking of baby killers, you believe in protecting life until it’s born, let’s talk about death panels, people that are denied healthcare after they are born. The right wing wants to keep us under our bed with a gun being afraid of what? Idaho has the Joseph Goebbels syndrome. Right to life, from the moment of birth to the end of life. If you believe in the right to life it is not just for the unborn,it’s for the elderly, the poor, regardless of race, crede, color, gender or sexual orientation, or religious preference. The right wingers have a fear that there is Muslim under every rock, yes I believe in the right to carry a firearm, especially to protect us and our country from the right wing fascist that are trying to destroy our country. And as far as moving if I don’t like Idaho, I’m a Native American and I was here long before you.” I love this country. I want the right wing politicians out of the pockets of the corporate elite, let’s see some republicans that really care about this country, remember Eisenhower, Teddy Roosevelt and the Bull Moose Party, and Nixon wasn’t that bad. See the Nixon Healthcare Mandate.
idahois2gr82beblue on March 13 at 4:39 p.m.
I could argue back and forth all day about what was just posted, but that would just be a waste of my time. However, I will respond to the comment “I was here long before you”. Excuse me, your ANCESTORS may have been here before me, but I can guarantee that my family has lived in Idaho just as long as you have. I have lived in Idaho all my life and find it pathetic how the majority of Native Americans feel that we owe them everything. We don’t owe them anything. Once they start sleeping in teepees again and hunting on horses with hand-made bow and arrows, I will consider. Oh, wait, that would no longer be possible because all of the beautiful wolves are eating up the wildlife that sustained the great Native Americans. This land is just as much mine as it is yours. Times have changed. And if you love Idaho as much as I do, then you would show it by preserving this great state. Its great for a reason: because its unadulterated.
