Extended The Philadelphia Phillies and manager Charlie Manuel agreed on a two-year contract extension through 2013. General manger Ruben Amaro Jr. said Thursday that the new deal included reworking Manuel’s salary for the 2011 season. Details weren’t made public, but Manuel will reportedly be paid between $7 million to $8 million total for the 2012 and 2013 seasons.

Expecting Horse of the Year winner Zenyatta is pregnant, according to racing manager Dottie Ingordo Shirreffs, wife of trainer John Shirreffs. The news comes just over two weeks after Zenyatta was mated with 2006 Preakness winner Bernardini. The gestational period for horses is around a year, meaning Zenyatta would be due in February.

Hospitalized Baseball Hall of Famer Yogi Berra was released from a hospital hours after the 85-year-old Hall of Famer tripped and fell in the New York Yankees’ clubhouse before a spring training game in Clearwater, Fla. The Yankees said Berra went by ambulance to the hospital as a precaution after landing on his backside.

Opened Montreal police started a criminal investigation into the on-ice hit by Boston’s Zdeno Chara that left the Canadiens’ Max Pacioretty with a severe concussion and cracked vertebra. Police said they are acting on a request by Louis Dionne, Quebec’s director of criminal and penal prosecutions. They added that after evidence is collected, it will be determined if there are grounds for prosecution.

Fined The NBA fined Hornets guard Marco Belinelli $10,000 for his flagrant foul on Shawn Marion during New Orleans’ 93-92 victory over the visiting Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday night. The foul caused Marion to lose his balance while attempting a fast-break layup. He crashed into photographers on the baseline, hurting his right ribs.

Suspended The NHL suspended Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Pavel Kubina for three games for delivering an elbow to the head of Chicago’s Dave Bolland. Kubina also was fined $60,096.76, a total based on his average annual salary. Kubina is eligible to return March 17 against Montreal.
