In brief: Injured Bryant, Lakers defeat Mavs in Dallas

NBA: Kobe Bryant overcame a sore ankle to score 16 points, helping the visiting Los Angeles Lakers beat the Dallas Mavericks 96-91 on Saturday night.

Bryant shot just 6 of 20, but scored six points and assisted on the other basket in a 9-0 run late in the second quarter.

• Wade carries Heat: Dwyane Wade had 28 points and nine assists, LeBron James scored 27 points while taking the fourth quarter off, and the Miami Heat ran away early to beat the visiting Memphis Grizzlies 118-85.

Wade also had five blocks, four of them in a 55-second span of the opening quarter.

• Teague, Crawford lead Atlanta past Portland: Jeff Teague matched a career high with 24 points, Jamal Crawford added 20 and the Atlanta Hawks beat the visiting Portland Trail Blazers 91-82.

• Nuggets beat Pistons: J.R. Smith scored 26 of his season-high 31 points in the second half, helping the Denver Nuggets pull away for a 131-101 victory over the visiting Detroit Pistons.

Blue Jackets snap seven-game skid

NHL: Steve Mason made 29 saves and Columbus’ penalty-killers turned back the Carolina Hurricanes in a 3-2 victory at Raleigh, N.C.

Derek MacKenzie scored twice and Samuel Pahlsson added a goal for Columbus, which snapped a seven-game losing streak (0-4-3).

• Salmela gives Devils OT win over Islanders: In Newark, N.J., Anssi Salmela scored his first goal of the season 3:09 into overtime to give the New Jersey Devils’ playoff drive another boost with a 3-2 victory over the New York Islanders.

• Garrison’s OT goal gives Panthers victory: In Sunrise, Fla., Jason Garrison scored with 16 seconds left in overtime to lift the Florida Panthers to a 4-3 victory against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Johnson emerges with lead at Doral

Golf: Dustin Johnson hit his stride and found his swagger on the back nine of the Blue Monster at Doral to emerge with a two-shot lead going into the final round of the Cadillac Championship at Doral, Fla.

He was at 13-under 203, although eight players are separated by three shots heading into the last day. All of those eight players are among the top 31 in the world ranking.

Price takes lead in Toshiba Classic: At Newport Beach, Calif., Nick Price followed his record-tying first round with a 3-under 68 at Newport Beach Country Club to take a two-stroke lead in the Toshiba Classic.

The 54-year-old Price had four birdies and a bogey a day after matching the Champions Tour record with a career-best 11-under 60. He has a tournament-record 14-under 128 total.

• Matteson takes Puerto Rico Open lead: At Rio Grande, Puerto Rico, Troy Matteson shot a 6-under 66 in the Puerto Rico Open to open a three-shot lead at 200 as he goes after his third PGA Tour victory.

Spokane native Alex Prugh shot a 71 and is at 211.

Vonn gains on Riesch in hunt for title

Miscellany: At Spindleruv Mlyn, Czech Republic, American skier Lindsey Vonn closed the gap on overall World Cup leader Maria Riesch by tying for 16th in a slalom while Riesch failed to finish. Vonn cut 15 points from Riesch’s overall lead and trails by 23.

• Walchhofer wins World Cup downhill, Kostelic overall: At Kvitfjell, Norway, Michael Walchhofer of Austria won a World Cup downhill and teammate Ivica Kostelic clinched the overall title.

A 21st-place finish for Kostelicwas enough to claim the World Cup globe.

• Cotto knocks down Mayorga: In Las Vegas, Miguel Cotto stopped Ricardo Mayorga in the final round to retain his piece of the 154-pound boxing title.

Cotto knocked Mayorga down in the 12th round before finally forcing him to quit at 53 seconds of the 12th round.

• Clark, Kokubo win halfpipe: Defending champions in the U.S. Open Snowboarding Championships, Kelly Clark and Kazuhiro Kokubo, captured the halfpipe titles again on the 500-foot pipe at Stratton Mountain at Stratton, Vt.

• Baker maintains near 2-hour lead in Iditarod: In Anchorage, Alaska, veteran John Baker seized the lead in the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race on the Yukon River and extended it on the 70-mile stretch from Eagle Island to Kaltag.

• Watch Me Go takes Tampa Bay Derby: Watch Me Go, a 43-1 long shot, won the Tampa Bay Derby in one of the biggest upsets in the history of the race, beating a field that included Kentucky Derby hopeful Brethren, who finished third, at Oldsmar, Fla.

• Uncle Mo wins debut: Top Triple Crown contender Uncle Mo recovered from a poor start to make a successful 3-year-old debut, winning the $100,000 Timely Writer Stakes at Gulfstream Park by 3 3/4 lengths at Hallandale Beach, Fla.

Uncle Mo is ranked No. 1 in the AP’s Run to the Roses Top 10 Kentucky Derby list, and he has won his four starts by a combined 27 lengths.

• Premier Pegasus wins with ease: In Arcadia, Calif., Premier Pegasus trounced favorite Jaycito and eight other 3-year-olds by more than seven lengths in the San Felipe Stakes at Santa Anita, announcing himself as a hot Kentucky Derby prospect and throwing wide open the West Coast field of Triple Crown contenders.
