In brief: Vargas adds to scoreless streak

Baseball: Jason Vargas pitched four innings of three-hit ball, extending his spring scoreless string to seven innings, and the Seattle Mariners beat a Los Angeles Angels split squad 2-0 Sunday in Tempe, Ariz.

Vargas struck out three. He worked two scoreless innings in his previous start, an outing where he did not throw any curveballs. He mixed in a few against the Angels on Sunday.

Vargas went to the bullpen to finish his day, stretching his pitch count to 65.

Jack Wilson singled and stole second off Angels starter Ervin Santana. He scored on Milton Bradley’s two-out double into the right-field corner.

Santana was making third start. In four innings, he allowed five hits and two walks with four strikeouts.

USC reinstates coach O’Neill

Basketball: Kevin O’Neill has been reinstated as Southern California’s basketball coach after being suspended during the Pac-10 tournament.

Athletic director Pat Haden announced the decision Sunday.

O’Neill was suspended for USC’s semifinal loss to Arizona on Friday after a verbal altercation involving him, his wife and a Wildcats booster at the team hotel a night earlier.

Haden says he believes the suspension served its purpose and will eliminate any such inappropriate behavior by O’Neill in the future. Haden says O’Neill still faces additional discipline by the school and a fine.

O’Neill says in a statement that he and his wife both regret the embarrassment they caused USC. He says he made a “serious error in judgment” Thursday.

The Trojans play VCU in an NCAA tournament first-round game Wednesday in Dayton, Ohio.

Love’s streak runs out

Basketball: Stephen Curry had 24 points and nine rebounds, and the Golden State Warriors ended Kevin Love’s four-month run of consecutive double-doubles in a 100-77 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves at Oakland, Calif.

Love had 12 rebounds but scored only six points on 1 of 6 shooting, ending his streak of double-doubles at 53 games. It was the longest streak since Elvin Hayes did it in 55 consecutive games in 1973-74.
