UCLA and Gonzaga at a glance

3 UCLA

Region: Spokane

Record: 28-4

Top scorer: Darxia Morris, 12.0

Top rebounder: Jasmine Dixon, 7.2

Keys to victory: Impose their will. The Bruins have a deliberate offense that averages only 65.3 points per game. They live off a defense that forces turnovers (21.9) and gives up 54.3 points. UCLA twice throttled high-scoring Oregon, but the Ducks don’t have Courtney Vandersloot. If the Bruins can keep the ball out of the Gonzaga point guard’s hands or at least slow her down in transition, the odds of success increase dramatically. Not particularly tall, the Bruins rebound well, so establishing an edge there to keep Gonzaga’s speed in check is important.

!1 Gonzaga

Region: Spokane

Record: 29-4

Top scorer: Courtney Vandersloot, 19.1

Top rebounder: Kayla Standish, 8.7

Keys to victory: Impose their will. The Bulldogs average 86.1 points a game, 32 more than UCLA gives up. If the Zags can get the tempo to their liking and force the Bruins to play catch-up, it could be difficult. While the Zags are second among the 333 schools in shooting (49.9 percent), UCLA is among the worst in 3-point shooting. UCLA reached 80 points only four times, but not in two months, and once it took double overtime. The Bulldogs hit 100 points six times and 90 on eight other occasions. It will be important not to get frustrated by a slow pace.
