Scott’s hitting helps Whitworth to doubleheader split

Landon Scott went 4 for 5, with three doubles and three runs batted in, as Whitworth (9-12) defeated Central Washington 6-4 Tuesday to open a nonconference baseball doubleheader at Ellensburg.

Reliever Troy Duppenthaler (1-0) pitched three shutout innings to earn the win.

Kyle Long pitched six shutout innings as the Wildcats (6-12) won the second game 7-0.

• Whitworth senior Tyler Pfeffer (Shadle Park) was named Northwest Conference player of the week after batting .444 in four games, with five runs and eight RBIs.

Men’s golf

Washington’s Chris Williams (Moscow) finished at 9-under-par 207 to win the Oregon Duck Invitational at Eugene Country Club by two strokes.

Reigning Western Athletic Conference player of the week Matt Rawitzer and teammate Damian Telles tied for 29th at 220 to lead Idaho (888) to eighth place.

• Washington State lost to South Carolina 3-1-1 in the 13th-place match of the Callaway Collegiate Match Play Championship at Hawks Ridge Golf Club in Ball Ground, Ga.

WSU’s Trent Sanders defeated Wesley Bryan 2 and 1.

Women’s golf

Sophomore Emily Guthrie (173) tied for 11th place and helped Whitworth (721) tie for fourth place at the UC Santa Cruz Invitational at Pasatiempo Golf Club.

• Idaho’s Kayla Mortellaro was named WAC golfer of the week after her third-place finish at last week’s Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational in Honolulu.

Men’s tennis

Idaho senior Lachlan Reed was named WAC player of the week after posting a 4-0 record in singles and doubles during two Vandals wins.

Softball

Linfield junior Emilee Lepp (Colville) was named NWC player of the week after totaling six homers and 14 RBIs during eight games in California.

Track and field

Whitworth seniors Alex Hymel and Elizabeth Mattila were named NWC athletes of the week after their efforts at the Dusty Lane Open at SFCC. Hymel broke Whitworth’s 21-year-old record in the javelin (216-10). Mattila won the 400 hurdles with an NWC-best 1:03.81.
