Suspended Two College of Southern Idaho men’s basketball players face marijuana charges and have been suspended from the team for arrests that happened three days after the Golden Eagles won the NJCAA national championship. Starting guard Jerrold Brooks and recent transfer Luke Cothron were arrested Tuesday night and arraigned Wednesday in 5th District Court on one count each of misdemeanor possession of a controlled substance. CSI athletics director Joel Bate announced Wednesday that the players had been suspended for a violation of team rules, but made no other comment. Expected San Francisco Giants outfielder Cody Ross is expected to miss the next three weeks because of a strained right calf. Ross hurt himself chasing down a flyball in a game Wednesday. The MVP of last year’s N.L. Championship Series had an MRI exam that confirmed the injury. Hospitalzed Philadelphia Eagles Hall of Famer Chuck Bednarik is in serious condition in a hospital near his Pennsylvania home. A nursing supervisor at St. Luke’s Hospital in Bethlehem would not provide additional information on the condition of the 85-year-old former star. Bednarik played linebacker and center for the Eagles long after the heyday of two-way players. His game-saving tackle helped the Eagles capture the 1960 NFL championship, the last title won by the franchise. Calling Consumer advocate Ralph Nader is calling for the elimination of college athletic scholarships, saying the move is necessary to “de-professionalize” college athletes. NCAA spokesman Bob Williams said referring to college athletes as professionals defies logic. Nader, a former presidential candidate, argued that his plan would also help reduce the “win-at-all- costs” mentality in high schools, by reducing the incentive of college scholarships.

Tested The contaminated-beef defense of Alberto Contador will be tested again after cycling’s governing body decided to appeal the Tour de France champion’s doping acquittal.The International Cycling Union said it will go to the Court of Arbitration for Sport to challenge the Spanish cycling federation’s decision not to ban Contador for his positive clenbuterol test.
