Mariners’ split squads defeat Dodgers, lose to Cubs
Miguel Olivo, playing his first spring training game in almost three weeks, drove in two runs with a sharp single up the middle in the first inning and the Seattle Mariners beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-0 in a game between split squads Friday night at Peoria, Ariz.
Olivo, out since March 5 because of a strained groin, had the key hit in a four-run first inning for the Mariners against Dodgers starter John Ely. Olivo is slated to be the Mariners’ opening-day catcher.
Seattle starter Erik Bedard allowed three hits in 5 1/3 innings. He struck out four.
Another M’s squad played at Mesa, Ariz., as Randy Wells, named the Cubs’ fourth starter, responded with 5 2/3 solid innings to lead Chicago to a 6-3 win over Seattle.
