Brewers’ Gallardo clamps down on Mariners

PHOENIX – Yovani Gallardo is ready, so let the Milwaukee Brewers’ season begin.

Gallardo struck out nine over five scoreless innings in his final start before opening day and the Brewers beat the Seattle Mariners 2-1 in 10 innings Saturday.

The All-Star righty gave up four hits and walked one. He will start Thursday at Cincinnati.

“I’m anxious, excited, whatever you want to call it,” Gallardo said. “Nervous. I think everybody gets nervous. The next five days are going to go by very quick.”

Gallardo gave up a double to Jack Wilson to start the game, but he struck out three to escape the inning.

Seattle took a 1-0 lead in the seventh when Craig Counsell misplayed a grounder by Brendan Ryan. The Brewers tied it in the eighth on a run-scoring single by Jeremy Reed.

Mariners starter Michael Pineda, trying to land the final spot in the rotation, gave up two hits in six shutout innings. He walked two and struck out seven.

Seattle’s Felix Hernandez will throw in a minor league intrasquad game today. He will throw 90-95 pitches.
