Bruce Pearl broke NCAA rules and then lied about it. Yet when asked if Pearl would be fired as men’s basketball coach, the Tennessee athletic director stated, “The jury is still out.” Pearl wasn’t fired until his team got blown out in its first NCAA tournament game.
Jim Tressel committed a major violation of NCAA rules and his subsequent public attempts to excuse his behavior and to “apologize” were even more embarrassing than his initial infraction. Yet when asked if Tressel would be fired as football coach, the Ohio State athletic director said, “Are you kidding?”
After his third starter in the same season got busted for marijuana use, WSU men’s basketball coach Ken Bone suspended him for last Wednesday night’s NIT game. The suspension was quickly lifted by director of athletics Bill Moos.
I think it is about time all the Division I universities abandon their pretentious mottos and adopt a common one:
