Letter: EWU deserves credit

Until recently, explaining to non-Washingtonians that I am a student at Eastern Washington University, has implied the sentences, “The school close to Gonzaga.”

Now, don’t get me wrong, it took a red field and a national championship for Eastern to finally earn some well-deserved attention. But while ESPN, and recently Ticketmaster.com, have caught the Eagles craze, is Spokane still behind the times?

When visiting Spokane you will see a national championship billboard and a window display in the downtown mall showing some Eagle spirit. EWU students and staff look forward to seeing displays of our beloved school, but it is often put on the back burner next to the array of Bulldog Nation.

The Gonzaga Bulldogs have earned their popularity with continuous winning basketball seasons and consecutive tournament appearances. This year, however, the Eastern Eagles were the ones to bring Spokane County back a solid piece of hardware.

With spring football already in play, I think it is time for Spokane to step up and give Eastern the credit it deserves. Next season is bound to be promising, but just imagine the outcome with the support of all of Spokane.

Go, Eagles!
