In brief: Yogurt, cheese classes begin

Trish Vieira of Spokane’s Family Farm is hosting yogurt-and-cheese-making classes at the Spring Hill Grange on May 21 and 24. A brief in last week’s Food section was incomplete.

Classes will be held 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and noon to 2 p.m. Each two-hour session is $35 and baby-sitting will be available in an adjoining room.

Each participant will receive a half gallon of milk from Spokane’s Family Farm. Those who would like yogurt starter cultures should bring a container.

The Spring Hill Grange is located at 8717 N. Brooks Road, near the intersection of Brooks and Coulee Hite roads. Spokane’s Family Farm is located at 21715 Coulee Hite Road.

Retreat center hosts brunch

Immaculate Heart Retreat Center will host its annual Mother’s Day brunch 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday.

The fundraiser includes an all-you-can-eat buffet, children’s activities, raffle baskets and a special gift for Mom. The brunch buffet includes a carving station, champagne, omelets-to-order prepared by students of the Spokane Community College Inland Northwest Culinary Academy and dessert bar.

Cost is $25 for adults and $6 for children ages 2-12 at the door. For reservations, call (509) 448-1224 or go online to www.ihrc.net. Event proceeds benefit Immaculate Heart’s retreat ministries.

The retreat center is located at 6910 S. Ben Burr Road. Sunday Mass also will be celebrated at 8 a.m. in the main chapel and the gift shop and bookstore will be open.

Chef announces new classes

Steve Geving announced a new series of cooking classes at the Blanchard Community Center, 685 Rusho Road in Blanchard, Idaho. Geving lives in Blanchard and is a retired master chef, which is the highest level of achievement certified by the American Culinary Federation.

The Art of Cookery classes are $25 per person and they’re held 10:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. one day each month.

May 25: Michelin Star Chefs Creations of the World, with master chefs from England, Japan, France, Switzerland and the United States.

June 22: The Cuisine of Spain, From Tapas to Chicken Seville.

July 20: Smokin’, Grillin’, Chillin’ with Geving.

Aug. 24: Polynesian Hukilau Island Delicacies.

Sept. 21: Traveling the United States Classic Cuisine.

Oct. 19: Scandinavian Delights.

Nov. 23: Chinese Imperial Dynasty Cuisine.

Dec. 21 Home for the Holidays Japonnaise Style.
