Thomas has ace in NCAAs

Players with local ties had an impressive first day at the NCAA Division I Women’s West Regional golf tournament at Washington National Golf Club in Auburn, Wash.

The highlight of the day was a hole-in-one on the 150-yard 11th hole by St. George’s alum Chessey Thomas, who played for Lewis and Clark. Thomas, a freshman at Tennessee, shot a 2-over-par 74.

The Idaho Vandals have two players in the event. Kayla Mortellaro shot 75 and Teo Poplawski 76.

Tennessee’s Erica Popson had the low score of the day at 68. Southern California leads the team standings at even par. Washington is at plus-16.

Arena football

The Spokane Shock made two roster moves, adding wide receiver Chas Gessner and placing Adron Tennell on injured reserve.

Boys soccer

Medical Lake and Cheney won loser-out matches to open the District 7 2A tournament.

Devon Prince and Taylor Satcher scored second-half goals and each assisted the other as No. 4 Medical Lake defeated No. 6 West Valley 2-1 at Medical Lake. ML will play No. 1 seed East Valley at Gonzaga Prep on Saturday at noon in a loser-out match.

Cheney’s Jose Ferrari had two goals and two assists in the third-seeded Blackhawks’ 8-1 win over No. 5 Deer Park at Cheney. Xavier Day scored twice within one minute in the first half and later added an assist for Cheney. The Blackhawks play at No. 2 Pullman on Saturday at noon in a loser-out match.
