Washington State University expects its largest class of incoming freshmen this fall.

WSU likely will have 4,100 to 4,400 freshmen on its Pullman campus, based on confirmations the university received by the May 1 deadline.

The largest previous freshmen class was 3,411, admitted in 2008.

    What’s going on here?

Just a couple of months go I read on this very blog, almost on a daily basis, all of the doom and gloom college Presidents were lamenting concerning the blow to our university system as a result of state budget cuts.

Looks like the sky isn’t falling after all.

It’s called some of these kids probably applied to UW and WSU, and were turned away from UW because UW wants more out of state students (who pay more money) where WSU is not limiting in state students

It is also a case that for evert one of those 4,100 students, that is $9,000 in tuition coming to the school. In economics it can be looked at as similar to economics of scale.

Also it means a lot of families are going further in hock to debt, because they realize that for their kids to have the best chance, they need a college degree, and are doing whatever it takes to give them he chance, even if it means being in debt for a long time.

The sad thing is, way back when WSU was first opened, it was a land grant university, meant for the education of students of the region.. It was fully supported by the state, and there was no tuition. In fact the first mandiroty fees paid to the school were to build the ol hospital and Bohler Gym, and those were student fees. There were course fees for materials, but no tuition. It was built to truely bring education to the masses.

Now it is being used as a way to make money, and while plenty have said it is the republicans fault, it is in fact the democrats who have shredded the operating budget for the school system (K through college) in this state for years. Say what you want, but this state has had a democrat for a govenor for over 20 years, and the it has been even longer sine therecoublicans have had control of the state legislature. The closest they have been in the last 30 years was having a split chamber. People on here have said the republicans want uneducated masses, to have low income workers, but the democrats want them just as bad, to be able to have people on welfare that they can control by contolling the welfare handouts.

BOTH parties need to end the madness, end the fact that unemployed people come here because the benefits are better, end the drivers licenses and welfare for illegals, make cuts in DSHS, the most bloated useless department of the state, and put money back in education. Reform the teachers contracts, so that merit means more than seniority, and weed out all of the tenured teachers that are just marking time to retirement.cut administratore, not teachers, councellors and Sspecial education professionals. Get rid of all the BS posturing, and get the real work and real needs handled.
