In brief: Swanson signs with Idaho State

Basketball: Six-foot-7 Mead senior forward Garrett Swanson will play basketball for Idaho State University, Bengals coach Joe O’Brien has announced.

Swanson averaged a league-leading 21 points a game and nine rebounds while shooting 46 percent from the 3-point line. He was picked first-team All-Greater Spokane League.

“We have been watching him since last summer on the AAU circuit,” O’Brien said. “He is a forward who can step out and shoot the ball really well. We are excited about adding a player in the Spokane area.”

Miller staying at Arizona

Basketball: Sean Miller has signed an extension to remain the head men’s basketball coach at Arizona.

Mentioned as a candidate to replace Gary Williams at Maryland, Miller signed an extension late Saturday to stay in Tucson. Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed.

Miller has guided a turnaround at Arizona, leading the Wildcats to the NCAA tournament’s West Regional final this season after they had their 25-year run in the tournament end last year.

Miller led Arizona to a 30-8 record in 2010-11, just the fourth time the program has won 30 games, and was selected Pac-10 coach of the year after guiding the Wildcats to the conference’s regular-season title.
