Area roundup: Cougars fall to UNLV

UNLV scored single runs in six different innings to beat Washington State 6-3 on Sunday in nonconference baseball action in Pullman.

The loss sent the Cougars (20-22) to their first home nonconference series loss in 25 tries under coach Donnie Marbut.

Nate Blackham, Derek Jones and Collin Slaybaugh delivered RBI singles for WSU, and starter James Wise (4-5) took the loss but tied a career high with eight strikeouts.

The Cougars’ scheduled game today at Portland has been canceled due to an unplayable field. The Cougars and Pilots will play a doubleheader May 17 in Pullman. The next series for the Cougars begins Saturday against Arizona at Bailey-Brayton Field.

• Stanford scored six runs in the eighth inning to come back for a 7-2 win over Washington in Pac-10 action in Stanford, Calif.

UW (13-30, 4-14 Pac-10) starter Austin Voth limited the Cardinal to one unearned run on six hits over six innings and didn’t factor in the decision.

The Huskies host Oregon State on Friday at Safeco Field in Seattle.

Softball

Top-ranked Arizona State completed a three-game sweep over No. 13 Washington with a 6-2 victory in Seattle, the Huskies’ fourth straight Pac-10 series loss.

Freshman Bryana Walker (3-5) pitched her first career complete game for UW (32-13, 7-11 Pac-10), allowing six runs on 11 hits.

The Huskies end the regular season with a three-game set at Oregon State, beginning Thursday.
