Your week

YOUR HEALTH

Want to lose weight? Go to bed earlier, a new study suggests.

Staying up late can lead to an additional 2 pounds a month weight gain, according to Northwestern University research reported in the online journal Obesity.

Late sleepers consumed more calories at dinner and, after 8 p.m., ate more fast food, drank more high-calorie soft drinks and had lower fruit and vegetable consumption, the study found.

Overall, they consumed 248 more calories per day than normal sleepers – mostly in the afternoon and evening.

“When sleep and eating are not aligned with the body’s internal clock, it can lead to changes in appetite and metabolism,” said the study’s senior author, Dr. Phyllis Zee.

YOUR HOME

No one wants cockroaches. Here are tips from the National Pest Management Association for keeping them out of your house:

• Don’t let dirty dishes accumulate in the sink and sit there overnight.

• Remove garbage from your home regularly, and vacuum regularly.

• Periodically check and clean the evaporation pan under your refrigerator or freezer.

• Seal cracks in your home’s exterior of your home to keep pests out.

• If you suspect an infestation, contact a licensed pest professional to identify the species and recommend the proper treatment.

YOUR FOOD

Real cooks do make quiche – especially if it’s as easy as this quick Ham and Wild Mushroom Quiche that uses bread crumbs in place of a pastry crust. For the recipe, see page C5.
