Cheney’s behind times

In this day and age, recycling seems like a no brainer. In my 23 years of life I have never lived in a city without an efficient waste management program until moving to Cheney. Cheney is one of the only cities in Spokane County not to offer a curbside pickup of recyclable material.

With a population of 10,680 and a state university within its city limits it seems incomprehensible to not offer this service. The only option in Cheney is to separate, collect and transport the material to a waste management facility yourself.

Surprisingly, Cheney seems to be the only city in the county that is forced to go to these measures for something so simple; areas such as Airway Heights, Medical Lake, Newman Lake and Liberty Lake all receive the ability to participate in curbside pickup of recyclable material but have substantially lower populations and do not have a state-funded university within their limits.

This needs to change and fast. The only real way to get this done is by getting the public involved.
