Thelen’s homer sparks Clarkston at district softball

Lexi Thelen smacked a two-run home run in Clarkston’s three-run seventh inning and the Bantams rallied to beat the Deer Park Stags 4-2 in a District 7 2A softball tournament game at Deer Park on Tuesday.

Emma Sandaine had a solo homer for Clarkston in the top of the second inning to tie the score at 1.

In the other district game, Hunter Allen went 3 for 4 with a homer and three RBIs and struck out nine in a complete-game effort as the East Valley Knights breezed to a 10-4 win over the visiting Medical Lake Cardinals.

Clarkston will play at West Valley on Thursday, while East Valley travels to Cheney as the tournament kicks in to double-elimination play.

District 4A/3A tennis

The 4A singles matches stayed mostly true to form with the top four girls seeds advancing to the semifinals at Central Valley. Fourth-seeded Chase Klingel of Lewis and Clark failed to advance to the boys singles semis at Mead.

In boys 4A doubles play, Matt Williams and Scott Wortley of LC didn’t make it out of quarterfinals play. All four seeded girls doubles teams advanced.

In 3A girls singles at University, only top seed Caylee Lamm of U-Hi advanced to the semifinals. Shadle Park’s Sarah Letsch and U-Hi teammates Sena Burchak and Hannah Nichols all pulled off upsets to advance.

The top two seeds in boys and girls doubles and boys singles all advanced.

Golf

Lakeside’s boys and Colville’s girls took home team titles in the District 7 1A tournament at the Chewelah Golf Course.

Lakeside’s Ryan Newcomb shot a 75 to win boys medalist honors with a subdistrict/district total of 148. Jess Winget of Freeman was second at 149, followed by Colville’s Drew Cowbrough at 154. The top 17 boys advance to the District 6/7 regional tournament.

Alyssa Maine of Freeman was the girls medalist with a two-round total of 165. Chewelah’s Arlee Coleman was a distant second at 180. Also qualifying for regionals were Colville’s Megan Ray and Mary Rothwell and Chewelah’s Morgan Farrington.

• Moscow’s boys and girls won team titles at the 4A Region I tournament at Twin Lakes Village Golf Course.

Lakeland’s Derek Bayley was boys medalist, while Kati Green of Moscow topped the girls field.
