Seattle officer suspended for racial incident

SEATTLE — A Seattle police detective who was caught on video last year using anti-Mexican language while detaining a Latino man gets to keep his job, but he will be suspended 30 days. Detective Shandy Cobane said Thursday he’s sorry about what he did and he hopes to make it up to the community. Police Chief John Diaz announced Cobane’s punishment at a news conference. The suspension is the harshest that Diaz can dole out short of termination, and it comes at a time when the U.S. Justice Department is investigating whether the department has a pattern of violating the rights of minorities. Diaz said Cobane will meet with the Latino community and speak to other officers about what he did. The chief warned that going forward, the presumptive punishment for officers who use racial or ethnic slurs will be termination.
