String quartet closes season Sunday

The Spokane String quartet closes its season Sunday with an ambitious, powerful piece of modern music.

Steve Reich’s “Different Trains” pays homage to those who suffered and died in Nazi concentration camps, using taped excerpts of Holocaust survivors’ recorded testimonies to accompany the multilayered, minimalist music.

The Kronos Quartet’s recording of the piece earned Reich the Grammy for Best Contemporary Composition in 1989.

On a more traditional note, Sunday’s program also will include quartets by Boccherini and Dvorak.

The concert begins at 3 p.m. at the Bing Crosby Theater, 901 W. Sprague Ave. Tickets are $18 for adults, $15 for seniors and $10 for students, through TicketsWest outlets (800-325-SEAT, www.ticketswest.com).

Coeur d’Alene Symphony

The Coeur d’Alene Symphony concludes its 30th season with a concert Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Lake City Community Church, 6000 N. Ramsey Road, Coeur d’Alene.

The program includes Debussy’s “Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun,” Haydn’s Symphony No. 45 (“Farewell”) and Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Scheherazade.”

The Haydn symphony will be conducted by Michael H. Korpi, winner of this year’s “Golden Baton” contest for audience members.
