Ferris’ Geranios, Central Valley’s Ho win District 4A singles titles

Second-seeded players Tom Geranios of Ferris and Leslie Ho of Central Valley won singles titles Thursday as the District 8 4A tennis tournament completed its four-day run at CV.

Geranios beat top-seeded Alex Marcinkowski of Gonzaga Prep 6-4, 2-6, 6-3. Ho edged top-seeded Katijene Stime of Mead 6-3, 1-6, 7-5.

Top seeds took the doubles titles. G-Prep’s Riley Poppy and Alex Hattamer topped Mead’s Santiago Pedraza and T.J. Westre 6-3, 6-1, and Lewis and Clark’s Malea Webb and Hayley Hendricksen beat Mead’s Elise Ellingsen and Chelsea Motzer 6-2, 6-3.

• Unseeded Hannah Nichols of University beat top-seeded teammate Caylee Lamm 7-6, 7-5 for the District 8 3A girls singles title at U-Hi. Top-seeded Connor Larkin of Mt. Spokane swept teammate Caleb Deibel 6-1, 7-5 for the boys singles title. Top-seeded Jessie Barth and Lauren Archibald of U-Hi beat fellow Titans Maddie Walsh and Stephany Le 6-2, 6-3 in girls doubles.

Softball

Megan Haux had four RBIs and Lewis and Clark (6-14) tied the game in the seventh and won it in the eighth on errors during an 8-7 win over Gonzaga Prep (3-18) in a loser-out game of the District 8 4A tournament at Whitworth University. Sammy Beemer struck out six for the Tigers, who play at winner-to-regional, loser-out game against Central Valley (9-11) at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Whitworth.

• Katelyn Bauman pitched a three-hitter, striking out five, to help Mt. Spokane (15-5) to a 3-1 win over Shadle Park (13-7) in a loser-out opener of the District 8 3A tournament at Whitworth. The Wildcats struck for three runs in the sixth inning. Mt. Spokane will play top-seeded University (17-3) at 3 p.m. today at Whitworth for the district title and seeding to regionals.

• Jessica Lupinacci had a two-run single in the first inning and Lindsie Scholwinski pitched a five-hitter with seven strikeouts as Coeur d’Alene qualified for state with a 3-1 win over visiting Lewiston in 5A Region I play.

• Kelli Peckham struck out 16 and Gabbi Espindola hit a two-run homer in the fifth as West Valley (21-0) defeated visiting Clarkston 5-1 at the District 7 2A tournament. Brooklyn Robinson finished 3 for 4 with two RBIs for the Eagles, who will meet Cheney at 2 p.m. Saturday at Medical Lake for the top seed to regionals. … Gracie Pitts sent the game into extra innings with a solo homer in the seventh and Samee Silvieus scored the winner with a single in the eighth as Cheney (15-6) edged visiting East Valley 5-4. EV (14-8) will play Clarkston (8-13) at noon Saturday at ML in a loser-out game.

• Lakeland eliminated visiting Sandpoint 8-0 in 4A Region I play at Rathdrum. Lakeland will host Moscow in a winner-to-state, loser-out game at noon Saturday.

Baseball

Beau Kerns pitched a five-inning no-hitter and Kyle Mai had four hits as Lewiston qualified for state with an 18-0 win over visiting Lake City to complete the 5A Region I tournament.

• Ryan Snyder struck out five in a complete game and finished 3 for 3 with an RBI as host Moscow beat Lakeland 7-3 at the 4A Region I tournament. The Bears will again host Lakeland at 4 p.m. today in a winner-to-state game.

Golf

Tyler Carlson (66), Michael Baldeck (68) and Bo Baker (73) finished 1-2-3 to lead Clarkston to the boys team title at the District 7 2A tournament at Deer Park Golf Course. Pullman (147.5 points) edged Cheney (147) for the girls title behind medalist Paige Whidbee (78) and runner-up Faith Williams (93).

Boys basketball

Former Northwest Christian coach John Edwards has been named head coach at Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls).

Edwards replaces David Pratt, who was fired after six seasons after it was alleged that he encouraged his players to practice on a snow day, violating school district procedure.
