Lakeland nabs Idaho State 4A baseball berth

Lakeland came up with an 11-2 victory at top-seeded Moscow on Friday to win the lone 4A Region I berth to next week’s Idaho state baseball tournament.

The Hawks had only seven hits, two by Gage Long, but took advantage of five Moscow errors.

Cody Vandever spaced out five Bears hits and went the distance to pick up the victory.

• Tyler Schaffer pitched a six-hit shutout and Casey Rogstad went 3 for 4 with two RBIs as tournament host and top seed Timberlake blanked Kellogg 7-0 on Friday to advance to today’s 3A District I-II baseball championship game.

The Tigers will play Bonners Ferry, which defeated Priest River 9-3, at noon for a state berth.

Softball

Morgan Cummings and Chelsea Grosvenor slugged home runs and Tia Asbury pitched St. Maries to a 14-2 victory over Priest River to advance to the Idaho District I-II 3A softball championship game today against Timberlake.

Tennis

Thomas Hitchens and Brianne Hart of Lakeside swept the singles titles at the District 7 1A tournament played at East Valley on Friday.

Chewelah won the boys team title by three points over Riverside, and Colville nipped Lakeside by a point in the girls.

The top four singles players and doubles teams advanced to regionals.

Golf

Lewis and Clark senior Robby McKee led the boys field with a 1-under-par 69 after the first round of the District 8 4A tournament played at Wandermere. LC junior Megan Haase had a 3-under 69 to lead the girls competition.

The second and final round will be played on Tuesday at Indian Canyon. The top seven boys and girls will advance to the state tournament.
