Area roundup: Arizona cruises past Cougs

Arizona built an 8-0 lead after four innings en route to an 8-1 baseball victory over Washington State on Sunday in Pullman, evening the Pac-10 series at one game each.

The Cougars (21-23, 6-14 Pac-10) scored their run in the ninth inning, when Tommy Richard led off with a triple and was driven home by Tam Sing.

The series concludes today at 5:30 p.m.

• Gonzaga’s West Coast Conference game at Portland on Sunday was moved to today at noon because of inclement weather. The Bulldogs (28-14-1, 10-3 WCC) won the first two games of the series.

Rowing

Washington State’s women’s team placed fifth at the Pac-10 Rowing Championships on Lake Natoma in Gold River, Calif., with the 14th-ranked Cougars finishing with 24 points, just 1.5 points behind seventh-ranked Washington.

Top-ranked California won the team title with 43.5 points.

WSU’s Varsity 8, Varsity 4 and Novice 8 all finished in fourth place in their races Sunday.

Washington’s men’s team won the Pac-10 title for the fourth time in the past five years. The Huskies won the Varsity 8, Varsity 4 and Second Varsity 8 races.

Tennis

The Community Colleges of Spokane men won the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges championships in Spokane, while the women came in second.

Bryan Lee, Garrett Mullen, Eric Bemis and Blake Van Dyke won singles titles for the CCS men and Bemis and Van Dyke teamed up for a doubles title. The Sasquatch earned 130 points, beating Treasure Valley by five points.

The CCS women were shut out in singles and doubles titles and finished with 98 points, 43 points behind Bellevue.

Softball

No. 12 Washington was selected to host regional play in the NCAA tournament. The Huskies are the top seed in the Seattle Region, which also includes No. 2 seed Auburn, No. 3 Brigham Young and No. 4 Portland State. Play begins Thursday afternoon.
