In brief: Emanuel sworn in as mayor

From Wire Reports

CHICAGO – Rahm Emanuel was sworn in Monday as Chicago’s first new mayor in more than two decades, a historic power shift for a city where the retiring Richard M. Daley was the only leader a whole generation had ever known.

The former White House chief of staff took the oath of office at downtown’s Millennium Park, and later headed to the fifth-floor office of City Hall that was Daley’s lair for 22 years.

“We must face the truth,” Emanuel said in his inaugural speech. “It is time to take on the challenges that threaten the very future of our city: the quality of our schools, the safety of our streets, the cost and effectiveness of city government, and the urgent need to create the jobs of the future.”

OMB workers seek unionization

WASHINGTON – Staffers at the White House budget office filed a petition Monday to join a labor union, seeking to gain more input over their working conditions.

About half of the career work force at the Office of Management and Budget signed the petition, said Peter Winch, deputy director of field services and education for the American Federation of Government Workers.

OMB spokesman Kenneth Baer said the Obama administration strongly supports the rights of workers to unionize.

‘Dougie’ rapper killed in drive-by

INGLEWOOD, Calif. – M-Bone of the rap group Cali Swag District, which scored a hit last year with the song “Teach Me How to Dougie,” was killed in a weekend drive-by shooting as he sat in a car outside a liquor store, police said Monday.

The 22-year-old Inglewood man, whose real name was Mante Ray Talbert, was sitting in the driver’s seat of his car shortly after 10:30 p.m. Sunday.

“Another car pulled alongside, gunshots were fired, and the victim was struck twice in the head,” said Lt. James Madia. A man sitting in the passenger seat of Talbert’s car was not injured, Lt. Gabriel Garcia said.

Lt. Steve Overly said the motive for the attack was under investigation.
