Nowitzki leads Mavs to Game 1 win over Thunder

NBA: Dirk Nowitzki made 10 of his first 11 shots and a playoff-record 24 straight free throws on the way to 48 points, leading the Mavericks to a 121-112 victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 1 of the Western Conference finals in Dallas on Tuesday night.

Nowitzki made 13 free throws in the third quarter.

Kevin Durant scored 40 points for Oklahoma City.

• Cavs big winners in draft lottery: The Cleveland Cavaliers won the draft lottery in Secaucus, N.J., and earned the No. 1 pick in the NBA draft.

The Cavaliers, who also have the No. 4 pick, got a huge jump on their rebuilding when a pick they got from the Los Angeles Clippers in a midseason trade moved up from the No. 8 spot to the top.

Minnesota will pick second and Utah turned New Jersey’s pick from the Deron Williams trade into the No. 3 selection.

Seguin helps Bruins even series with Lightning

NHL: Tyler Seguin had two goals and two assists and the Boston Bruins fed off the energy of the recently promoted rookie to beat the visiting Tampa Bay Lightning 6-5 and tie the Eastern Conference finals at one game each.

The Bruins scored five goals in the second period.

New Zealand’s Henderson takes Tour of California lead

Cycling: Greg Henderson of New Zealand powered to a surprising stage win and took the overall race lead at the Tour of California from British teammate Ben Swift.

Henderson (Team Sky) went to the front with about 500 yards left, and took the 121.9-mile Auburn to Modesto road race in 5 hours, 14 minutes and 29 seconds.

• Cavendish wins 10th stage of Giro: With a time of 4 hours, 49 seconds, Mark Cavendish of Britain won the 10th stage of the Giro d’Italia in a sprint finish in Teramo, Italy.

Race favorite Alberto Contador wore the pink jersey for the first time in this year’s Giro and retained the overall lead.

Fiesta Bowl requests return of campaign money

Football: The Fiesta Bowl is seeking the return of thousands of dollars in campaign contributions made to U.S. Sens. John McCain and Jon Kyl and other Arizona politicians, according to documents obtained by The Associated Press.

Bowl employees and their families made the contributions between 2000 and 2009, and were then reimbursed by the bowl. In all, the bowl wants $48,225.17 returned.

Boxing legend Leonard says he was abused by coach

Miscellany: Sugar Ray Leonard says in his upcoming autobiography that he was sexually abused by a coach as a young boxer in the early 1970s.

“The Big Fight: My Life In and Out of the Ring,” written with Michael Arkush, is due out next month. The account of abuse was first reported by The New York Times.

• Nehro pulls out of Preakness: Nehro, who finished second in the Kentucky Derby behind Animal Kingdom, will skip Saturday’s second leg of the Triple Crown and be pointed toward next month’s Belmont.

Despite Nehro’s absence, the race is expected to attract the maximum 14 horses – only the third time since 1991 that 14 horses have run in the Preakness.
