Gonzaga edges Pepperdine in key WCC baseball game

Mark Machtolf reached the century mark in the West Coast Conference.

Gonzaga presented its eight-year head coach with his 100th WCC victory on Friday with a 3-2 win at Pepperdine (20-29, 5-11 WCC) in the opener of a three-game series.

Ryan Carpenter and Cody Martin combined on a four-hitter with 12 strike outs as the Bulldogs (30-16-1, 13-3) also reached a milestone – winning 30 games for the fourth time in five seasons.

Carpenter (8-1), who retired 12 of the first 13 batters he faced before struggling in the fifth, struck out nine and allowed just one earned run. Martin finished up with four strikeouts in earning his conference-leading 11th save.

Gonzaga scored on a Billy Moon single in the first as he extended his hitting streak to 11 games to match his season high, an infield out in the second and a bases-loaded walk to Andy Hunter in the third.

GU is in a chase with San Francisco (14-4) for the WCC title.

• Both teams scored in just three innings, but Washington State had the biggest outbursts in a come-from-behind, 12-6 Pac-10 win over Oregon in the opener of a three-game weekend series at Bailey-Brayton Field in Pullman.

After spotting the Ducks (28-5-1, 7-15 Pac-10) a 5-0 lead after two innings thanks to a four-run Oregon second, the Cougars (23-25, 7-15) rallied with three in the third, five in the fifth and closed it out with four in the eighth.

Paul Clingan’s, pinch-hit, two-run single capped WSU’s winning rally.

Taylor Ard was 2 for 3 with three RBIs and two runs scored, Cody Bartlett drove in two runs and scored two and Derek Jones drove in two and scored three. After yielding five runs on five hits the first two innings, Adam Conley (6-6) allowed just one run on four hits the next five innings.

• A five-run third inning was all No. 8 Arizona State needed in a 6-0 Pac-10 win over Washington in Seattle.

Joey DiMichele’s two-run homer capped the big inning and gave Sun Devils (37-11, 15-7 Pac-10) pitcher Brady Rodgers (8-3) more than enough cushion as he handcuffed the Huskies (15-33, 5-17) on five hits.

Softball

Community Colleges of Spokane stayed alive in the NWAACC tournament in Portland with a 19-4 walloping of Green River in five innings of a loser-out game after the Sasquatch lost 7-5 to Mt. Hood in its first-round game.

CCS (20-23), which plays Olympic (15-16) this morning, needs to win three games today to earn a top-five finish.

Four unearned Mt. Hood runs in the first two innings did in CCS.

Sophomore Stephanie Chrystal pitched both games for CCS, striking out 10 in 11 innings, and contributed five hits, including a double and triple and drove in three runs against Green River (18-13). The Sasquatch closed out the second game with a nine-run fifth inning. Elisabeth Roginski was 3 for 3 with 2 RBIs.

• Freshman Kaitlin Inglesby (23-8) pitched a two-hitter, striking out six, to lead Washington (35-14) into today’s championship game of the NCAA Regional in Seattle with a 4-1 win over BYU.

Nikki Williams’ two-run single in the fifth produced what proved the decisive runs. The Huskies will meet BYU (40-17) for the regional championship at 2:30 p.m. If the Huskies win, they will advance to the Super Regionals. If they lose, a second game will follow.

Golf

Washington has four among the top 30, including Moscow grad Chris Williams, and the Huskies are tied for fifth going into today’s final round of the NCAA Southwest Regional in Tucson, Ariz.

Williams shot a 1-over-par 72 for 143, the No. 3 scorer for UW, and is tied for 24th.

The Huskies’ team score of 3-under 565 is tied for fifth with California. San Diego State has a five-shot lead over Arizona. The top five teams qualify for the NCAA Championships. UW has gone eight of the last nine years.

• Jarred Bossio of Idaho improved his score by five strokes in the second round of the NCAA South Central-Colorado Regional, shooting 2-over 74, but his 9-over score of 153 leaves him in 70th heading into today’s final round.

• North Idaho College finished 22nd in the 23-team field in the NJCAA Men’s Championships in Odessa, Texas, after shooting its best round of the 72-hole tournament, a 308, to finish at 1,247. Jeremy Jensen led NIC with a final-round 3-over 75 to tie for 72nd at 308.

• Washington improved its score by 10 strokes with a 9-over 297, but will have to wait until this morning to find out where its 916 ranks.

Darkness halted Friday’s third round with a half-dozen schools still on the course, including the top three teams.

That group includes Tennessee, but the Vols’ freshman from Spokane, Chessey Thomas (St. George’s), did finish, shooting a 12-over 84 for 245.
