Selected Former soccer phenom Freddy Adu was selected to the U.S. roster for next month’s Gold Cup, the first time in almost two years he’s been included in coach Bob Bradley’s plans. Adu has been playing at Rizespor in Turkey’s second division since January. The Americans will begin reporting Thursday to training camp in Cary, N.C.

Moving Basketball coach Ed DeChellis, who led Penn State to the NCAA tournament this year, resigned Monday to take the vacant job at Navy. The move comes as a surprise, after DeChellis orchestrated his alma mater’s first NCAA tournament bid in a decade. The Nittany Lions lost to Temple, 66-64, in the second round.

Hired Longtime assistant Steve Prohm was promoted to the men’s head basketball coaching job at Murray State, taking over for his mentor Billy Kennedy. Prohm spent the past five years at Murray as an assistant to Kennedy, who left recently to take the coaching job at Texas A&M.

Dismissed The Portland Trail Blazers have dismissed general manager Rich Cho after less than a year on the job. A statement released by the Blazers said the team and Cho had “parted ways.” Chad Buchanan, the team’s director of college scouting, will serve as acting general manager.

Died Two-time All-American Joe Steffy, who played with Doc Blanchard and Glenn Davis on some of Army’s greatest football teams and won the Outland Trophy as the nation’s top lineman in 1947, has died in West Point, N.Y. He was 85. He had dealt with heart problems in recent years. Steffy played on Army’s 1945 and 1946 undefeated teams under coach Earl “Red” Blaik.

Died Madrid police say Spanish cyclist Xavier Tondo has died in a freak accident after he was crushed between his car and a garage door in southern Spain. Juan Carlos Lopez, spokesman for the Civil Guard force in Granada, said the 32-year-old Tondo got out of the car to try to get the metal garage door to open but his car rolled forward and pinned him against the door.
