Film reveals industry practices

From Staff Reports

Mercy for Animals, a national animal rights group, is bringing a disturbing film to Spokane today.

“Farm to Fridge” is a 12-minute film showing footage of cruelty to animals at factory farms, hatcheries and slaughterhouses. Mercy For Animals will park a truck modified with 80-inch video screens at North Post Street and West Main Avenue to show the film twice today: 11 a.m. to noon, and 8:30 to 9:30 p.m.

Volunteers will also wear shirts with attached iPads that are playing the film.

Mercy for Animals plans to show “Farm to Fridge” at shopping centers, sporting events and other public places at more than 40 cities around the country.

Narrated by James Cromwell, it includes footage from undercover investigations by Mercy For Animals and other nonprofit groups. It shows what happens behind the closed doors of the nation’s largest industrial poultry, pig, dairy and fish farms, hatcheries and slaughter plants.

Activists say the agricultural practices are industry standard, defended by farmers and legal in most states – yet unknown to most Americans.
