Mariners stars Olerud, Martinez will join state hall of fame

Baseball: Seattle Mariners standouts John Olerud and Edgar Martinez will be inducted into the State of Washington Sports Hall of Fame today prior to the Yankees- Mariners game at Safeco Field.

They will be joined by Lea Watson, daughter of longtime Seattle newspaper columnist Emmett Watson, who will represent her father at the ceremony.

John Olerud (pictured) played college baseball at Washington State and had a 17-season career in the major leagues spending five years with the Seattle Mariners. While with Toronto, Olerud was a two-time All-Star and a member of two World Series championship teams with the Blue Jays and won the American League batting title in 1993 with a .363 average. He was an important part of the Mariners’ 2001 season when they compiled a 116-46 record. Olerud also earned all three of his career Gold Gloves while playing first base for Seattle in 2000, 2002 and 2003

Martinez is considered by many to be the greatest designated hitter in history, compiling a lifetime batting average of .312 in 18 seasons with the Mariners.

Indians tickets on sale Wednesday

Baseball: Spokane Indians tickets will go on sale Wednesday.

The Indians, who play 38 home games in short-season A baseball, begin the defense of their Northwest League East Division title on June 17 at home against Salem-Keiser.

Individual game tickets can be purchased at the Indians’ ticket office at Avista Stadium or by calling 343-6886. You can also purchase tickets at TicketsWest outlets or by calling 1-800-325-SEAT.

Advance purchases of upper box seats are available for $10. Reserved bench seats are $6 for adults and $5 for children 12 and younger, seniors, and military members with valid ID. Upper box seats on game days will be $11.
