M’s reliever to sit out with injury

The Mariners have another relief pitcher scheduled to do nothing for a while.

Joining closer David Aardsma on the sideline is Shawn Kelley, who has been advised not to pitch for about a month after an examination by Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala.

Kelley, who threw in three rehab outings with Class AA Jackson this week after a setback in a simulated game May 8, received a platelet-rich plasma injection in his right elbow Friday in Alabama and was to be re-examined this weekend by Mariners team doctor Edward Khalfayan in Seattle.

Kelley had partial Tommy John surgery on his elbow Sept. 1, and Mariners manager Eric Wedge said no additional procedure looks to be necessary.

“Not right now,” he said. “That would be significant, if they had to do something again.”

But Kelley, Wedge said, is “still feeling it (discomfort).”

Kelley had a 3-1 record and 3.96 earned-run average last season in 22 games with the M’s.

• All five Mariners starters have ERAs under 4.00.

The club has never had more than four accomplish that feat, with a minimum of 15 starts apiece.
