Baseball notebook: Guillen sounds off
White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen doesn’t want anyone to question his passion for winning and lashed out at Chicago fans for being forgetful.
Guillen was still steamed about Saturday’s 14-inning defeat to the Toronto Blue Jays and fired back at his critics before Sunday’s series finale, defending himself and his coaching staff against those calling for their jobs.
The manager said no one in the White Sox locker room has more passion for the game than he does and that he’d be “lying to myself” if he tried not to care so much about wins and losses.
He also decried Chicago fans’ short memories, saying that “when they’re drunk” they urinate on the display outside U.S. Cellular Field that honors the 2005 World Series champions.
The White Sox are 14-12 in the month of May, but have lost six of their last ten games.
Giants’ Posey out for season after surgery
San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey is out for the season after having surgery to repair three torn ligaments in his ankle sustained in a collision at home plate last week.
Head athletic trainer Dave Groeschner said Posey had two screws inserted into his lower leg to stabilize the ankle.
The 2010 N.L. Rookie of the Year broke a bone in his lower left leg and injured the ankle in a collision with Florida’s Scott Cousins on Wednesday night. Groeschner said the team is optimistic Posey will be ready for opening day next season, but that he has a long road ahead.
Posey was hitting .284 with four home runs and 21 RBIs in 45 games.
Reds’ LeCure sits, tweets, placed on DL
One day after tweeting he was “wasting space” in the Reds’ bullpen, right-hander Sam LeCure was placed on the disabled list on Sunday with a strained right forearm.
The Reds had their pitching depth stretched in a 7-6 loss to the Braves in 12 innings on Saturday night. Manager Dusty Baker used six relievers, but not LeCure.
LeCure posted: “I don’t know what to say folks. I desperately want to pitch and I feel like I’m wasting space as I’m sure you all do. I’m ready if they call”.
Baker said LeCure couldn’t throw all his pitches and could not be called on.
