Traffic slow on I-90 near Medical Lake

Traffic cameras in the Spokane region showed that Interstate 90 is backed up eastbound at Thomas Mallen Road, but the line of vehicles has been getting shorter as the evening wears on. Drivers have to funnel into a single lane for a bridge reconstruction project near the top of Sunset Hill. An alternative route is to use the Medical Lake exit at milepost 272 and transfer onto Geiger Boulevard on the north side of I-90, using Sunset Boulevard to get into the city. Other traffic cameras in Spokane showed no delays as of 6:15 p.m. Spokane police reported a rollover accident about 5:40 p.m. at Monroe Street and Wellesley Avenue. Northbound traffic was blocked on Monroe. Motorists returning to the Puget Sound region from holiday weekend activities found a congested I-90 between Ellensburg and Snoqualmie Pass. The Washington State Department of Transportation reported that the westbound backup was about 20 miles long late this afternoon An eastbound driver reported that the slowdown extended nearly to Ellensburg. Traffic should improve as the evening hours continue. Afternoon travel is the most popular time of day for returning from weekend trips, the DOT said.
