Man flees police, jumps into cold Spokane River

A man fleeing police during a traffic stop early today ran onto the Trent Avenue Bridge over the Spokane River and jumped into the frigid water, authorities reported.

The incident occurred when officers pulled over a vehicle at Trent and Erie Street. A man inside the vehicle ran to the bridge and jumped in at 1:50 a.m., disappearing under the bridge.

Spokane fire crews were called to the scene and found the man clinging to a bridge piling in about chest-deep water. He was rescued and loaded into an ambulance to start treatment for hypothermia, the fire department reported. He was then taken to Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center for treatment.

The police department has the case under investigation, fire officials said.

Did he dump his illegal substances? What a dipstick. No wonder SPD has so many incidents, the locals are nuts.

  • BlondeSquawker on November 01 at 9:28 a.m.

I suppose the cold river would be preferable to repeated baton strikes and tasing to death.

  • valleyman on November 01 at 10:26 a.m.

@BlondeSquawker: Your comment shoes just how little time people of your anti-police bent actually spend finding out facts before going off.

KQNT Radio 520AM this morning reported the man had felony warrants issued by the courts and was wanted on multiple charges. He fled a traffic stop and jumped into the river to avoid arrest.

Try and use just an ounce of objectivity and consider that sometimes a story really is just a story, and not a doorway to some giant conspiracy where the police want to randomly kill people…

  • Shadedmuse on November 01 at 10:32 a.m.

He probaly did not want to get shot.

  • Bruce (aka thatoneguy) on November 01 at 10:36 a.m.

^ ^ ^ Blonde, I was thinking something like that. Somehow, though, I doubt the guy was thinking coherently enough to weigh his chances between freezing to death/going over the falls and being beaten/tased/shot to death by the police. (Or maybe he was, and just reached a different conclusion than I would have — which, as we all know from experience when someone makes a different decision than we think they should, is a clear indication of craziness &/or stupidity.)

  • valleyman on November 01 at 10:40 a.m.

@Shadedmuse: Ditto for you what I said to BlondeSquawker.

  • Byrdie714 on November 01 at 10:49 a.m.

The credibility of the SPD is severly lacking, valleyman.

Regardless if one is an individual with MR/DD, or one with a criminal record or not, interacting with Spokane police runs a high risk of being shot, or beaten with a baton.

    Take your pick.

The “police is your friend” motto is long gone and outdated.

  • valleyman on November 01 at 10:51 a.m.

You people are nuts… According to your theory, every person now has the right to run, hide, fight, or otherwise resist the police because of your perceived wrongdoings…

    That folks is called anarchy…

  • Byrdie714 on November 01 at 10:56 a.m.

Maybe we need anarchy to bring back responsibility and accountability to our government……

  • Bruce (aka thatoneguy) on November 01 at 11:05 a.m.

Valleyman: you should be aware that many / most of the people commenting on S-R stories are commenting based on the information provided in those stories. Just FYI.

  • another_perspective on November 01 at 11:15 a.m.

Kivaari and valleyman must be roommates in a one bedroom house. After the Zehm affair blows over they probably will get into cat fights over interior decorating.

  • reservedparking on November 01 at 11:24 a.m.

Valleyman: 590 AM. Credibility suffers when you can’t get the simple stuff right.

But yeah, I agree with you. Conspiracy theory fodder seems to flourish in here. Gets plenty of fertilizer.

  • Ed Byrnes on November 01 at 11:52 a.m.

I begin by stating that this suspect was being pursued for legitimate law enforcement reasons and I have no problem with this specific case.

Our right to resist is limited to unlawful police behavior and generalized resistance at the individual level is not something I encourage. Exercising our right within this limitation would more likely give rise to liberty than anarchy.

Nonetheless a reasonable person can realistically assess that the SPD has very little credibility. I assert that the SPD officers have brought this upon themselves since not one SPD officer has publicly decried the aberrant behavior of their colleagues like Karl Thompson or Bradley Thoma (for just two examples). Omerta, the code of silence, is more befitting of organized crime syndicates than law enforcement agencies whose members seek to claim universal virtue.

To blindly accept assertions that SPD officers are always in the right leads to totalitarianism, an outcome equally distasteful as anarchy.

bruce: He wouldn’t have “gone over the falls.” Avista is fixing the spillways upriver (near the Inn at the Park) and they’ve got the water pretty much shut down except for what they are running through their generators at the upper and lower falls.

Ed: When the RICO indictments are handed down (and soon) your analogy of “Omearta” won’t be too far off.

Valleyman: “According to your theory, every person now has the right to run, hide, fight, or otherwise resist the police because of your perceived wrongdoings.”

I don’t know Valleyman…innocent people have died at the hands of local law enforcement; that isn’t perception, that’s FACT.

  • Squid on November 01 at 2:51 p.m.

The SPD doesn’t beat and kill people with felonies.

  • Sunshinegurl on November 01 at 3:16 p.m.

None of us have heard the “jumpers” side of this story so until we know for sure that he jumped and didn’t fall in after being tazed I don’t think any of us should jump to conclusions.

  • detroitdude on November 01 at 4:10 p.m.

I like it when the cop posters on here get all bent out of shape when anyone voices contempt of how law enforcement operates in this area. Then on yesterdays thread, it was a defense of the bullet hole zombie Obama LOL.

  • Lewis on November 01 at 4:52 p.m.

oh big bad valleyman dont like others comments, boo hoo poor valleyman

i have the same one . i would chose my own death in the water then let the cops beat me to death then cover it up like all the other cop murders.

  • valleyman on November 01 at 5:10 p.m.

Don’t like what I have to say - slur me and call me names. The fact you tolerant, love everyone but hate the cops people think that calling Kivaari and I gay cheapens our point and strengthens yours shows you are trash and anything and everything you say is not worthy of time it took you to type it out.

Does calling me gay make anything I say less important? Those of you with this point of view are homophobic. Again, debate the idea, don’t attack the messenger.

**To the earlier point about the radio station, mea culpa… I listen to both 920 KXLY and 590 KQNT and got the two confused. I heard the information on 590 KQNT**

  • Lewis on November 01 at 5:14 p.m.

    valleyman mad boo hoo

  • Lewis on November 01 at 5:16 p.m.

valleyman you dont say anything you tell mistruths and when called on it you blow up like a little kid and say why bother you know it all.

all you do is call people out that you disagree with, i am just doing the same to you, how does it feel?

cant take the heat get away from the fire.

  • nslopeofw on November 01 at 5:20 p.m.

    Squid-
Thats because, they usually either run away, or wait for SWAT with known felons. Just an average Joe with a rock or pop bottle, they rush in and commence the beating.

Now-a-days, average citizen gets pulled over for speeding ticket, he/she needs to first turn on the video of their cell phone, exit the vehicle, hands above head, get to their knee’s, and make sure the police know you are complying. Then pray they are in a good mood so you dont either get beat or killed.

  • misjustice on November 01 at 6:20 p.m.

I can’t swim, so it would be a difficult decision.

Jump into a cold river or get beaten with an Ironwood baton, shot with a Taser, shot with a gun, or possibly sexually assaulted on the way to the jail? OR possibly a combination of all of the above?
    Hmmmmmm….

    I dunno?

  • another_perspective on November 01 at 6:39 p.m.

valleyman I didnt hear Kivarri complaining.

Did anyone know that if the investigating officer doesnt complete an investigation on his shift, its shelved and no longer looked at? Standard SPD procedure. The excuse is if you carry it over for a day, then you wont have time for that next days investigations.

    B.S.

  • jddavis on November 01 at 7:45 p.m.

    @Valleyman

I see you confusing those who post about local law enforcement in a negative light as people who hate law enforcement…generally speaking.

Speaking only for myself, I will tell you I respect and admire LEOs. I despise and hold contempt for dishonest LEOs. You see Valleyman, the occupation doesn’t matter; if the person is corrupt and dishonest I have no use for them.

When such people operate in a position of public trust and/or authority, often the result is someone getting screwed over. This time, an innocent man lost his life.

If this behavior is acceptable to you and your compadres, you should find some other line of work. The community had grown tired of the cavalier attitude shown by you on these threads and by the leadership of local law enforcement agencies.

  • Adelaide on November 01 at 9:46 p.m.

I wonder if the majority of you realize how crazy you sound. The guy is a convinced felon who has violated his parole and has multiple warrants out for his arrest. He knew he was about to get caught and sent back to jail so he ran. People in his position have a bad habit of doing that. Your absurd conspiracy theories just undermine any credible complaints or observations you have.

  • nslopeofw on November 02 at 10:38 a.m.

They are not “theories”, when proof exists of multiple cop killings in Spokane.

  • misjustice on November 02 at 11:59 a.m.

A convicted felon, at least according to the police. How do we know for sure?
The cops lie, citizens die…right Olive Oil and Ozman?
