Central Valley outlasts Richland in 4A regional volleyball

Kiendra Chester and Mikayla Ness combined for 36 kills Tuesday as Central Valley opened 4A regional volleyball play with a 3-2 win at Richland.

The Bears won the clincher 16-14 after trailing 13-9. Chester’s kill broke a 14-all tie.

CV’s Delaney Fisher and Erika Bowden combined for 49 digs.

The tourney shifts to District 8 champion Mead on Saturday for state-qualifying matches. CV will play Mead at 1 p.m.

Elsewhere, host Gonzaga Prep’s season ended with a 3-2 loss to Wenatchee that gave the Panthers a 3 p.m. Saturday matchup against Big Nine top-seeded Walla Walla at Mead. Lindsay Stockton had 15 kills and 18 digs for the Bullpups, who dropped the final game 15-10 after rolling 25-13 in the fourth.

• North Central’s season ended with a 3-1 loss to Kamiakin in 3A regional play at Kennewick. The Indians won the first game 25-21 and led the fourth game 19-13, but the Braves advanced to Saturday’s state-qualifying matches at West Valley (Yakima). Junior Sam Hill led NC with 24 kills, two blocks and two aces. The GSL’s last representative is Mt. Spokane, which will meet Kennewick at 3 p.m. Saturday.

• Kettle Falls and Springdale won loser-out openers of the District 7 2B tournament to advance to double-elimination play. Sophomore Kourtney Keenan had seven kills, seven digs and four aces as KF ousted visiting Republic 3-1. Alyssa Stout led Republic with 21 kills, six digs and three aces. Springdale eliminated visiting St. George’s 3-1. The tournament shifts to St. George’s on Thursday. At 2 p.m., KF plays Colfax and Liberty meets Northwest Christian. Afterward, Springdale plays Reardan and Lind-Ritzville/Sprague plays Davenport. Loser-out matches follow.

Girls soccer

Kara Marbury fed Malia Maack for the winning goal at 84 minutes to give Mead (13-3) a 1-0 overtime win over Central Valley (12-4) in a District 8 4A seeding match at Albi Stadium. Mead earned the No. 2 seed and will play at Richland at 1 p.m. Saturday in regional state-qualifying play. CV, the No. 3, plays at Moses Lake at the same time, as does No. 1 Gonzaga Prep, which will host Davis.

• Amanda Bliesner slipped a shot past a sliding Pullman goalkeeper at 42 minutes to give East Valley (13-6) a 1-0 win over Pullman (14-5) in the District 7 2A title match at Gonzaga Prep. Pullman shut out the Knights twice during the league season. EV advances directly to the State 2A tournament and is off until Nov. 9. Pullman will host Ephrata at 1 p.m. Saturday for a state berth. … In the night match at G-Prep, Courtney Hossfeld scored off a crossing pass from Halie Gronenthal as West Valley (13-5) posted a 1-0 win that eliminated Cheney (10-9). WV will play at Prosser at 1 p.m. Saturday for a state berth.

College football

Sophomore Ryan Loutsis (defensive) and freshman Austin Ehlo (special teams) were named Northwest Conference athletes of the week after helping Whitworth to a 25-24 double-overtime win over Willamette last Saturday.

Loutsis had a game-high 13 tackles, including two for loss. Ehlo (Lewis and Clark High) averaged 41.4 yards on seven punts.

Swimming

Senior Rory Buck and freshman Samantha Smith earned athlete of the week honors after helping Whitworth to team titles at last weekend’s NWC Sprint Pentathlon.

Buck won two events and was part of two winning men’s relays. Smith won one event and was part of two winning women’s relays.
