Hired The Seattle Mariners hired Chris Gwynn as their new director of player development after current minor league director Pedro Grifol was made the new manager at Single-A High Desert. Gwynn previously worked as the director of player personnel for the San Diego Padres. He is the younger brother of Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn. Gwynn will oversee all aspects of the Mariners’ minor league system. It’ll be his 14th season working in a major league front office, including the last 12 with the Padres.

Re-signed Yankees general manager Brian Cashman signed a three-year contract worth about $9 million, a day after his previous deal expired. The announcement came less than 24 hours after CC Sabathia chose not to become a free agent and instead agreed to a contract that gave him an additional $30 million guaranteed for 2016. Cashman has been GM since February 1998, when he succeeded Bob Watson. The only general manager to serve longer with the Yankees is Ed Barrow from 1920-45.

Died A suburban Southern California high school was stricken with grief following the death of a popular varsity football player whose father is 10-year NFL veteran Erik Kramer. Griffen Kramer, a backup quarterback on the Thousand Oaks High School football team, died Sunday night at a friend’s home, according to a statement issued by his school. It said Kramer, 18, failed to wake after going to bed. Initial indications suggest his death was because of alcohol poisoning, the statement said.

• Boxer Thomas McNeeley Jr., who battled heavyweight champion Floyd Patterson and raised a son who took on Mike Tyson, has died of complications from a seizure. He was 74. McNeeley was 23-0 when he took on Patterson, who stopped him in the fourth round of their December 1961 bout in Toronto.

Pleaded Prosecutors dropped a felony gun charge against Detroit Pistons center Ben Wallace, who pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges of drunken driving and possessing a firearm while under the influence of alcohol.
